Under directed supervision, maintains and operates the hospital telephone and operates pocket pagers and overhead paging system. Distribute interdepartmental correspondence and other items as directed. Able to work alone or with co-workers and ability to get along with all staff.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required: Typing, word processing or data entry skills at 50 wpm; Excellent spelling, math and problem solving skills; Excellent pronunciation and communication skills; Ability to organize work and attend to detail; 1 year clerical experience including telephone skills; and Previous switchboard/PBX experience. Must be able to walk, lift bend. Able to follow written and verbal communication.
Preferred: Medical terminology.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS
Sitting long periods of time in confined area and also move around the department to sort mail into correct locations. Must also be able to walk to designated areas on each floor while pushing the mail cart and deliver mail. This requires one 30 minute round of the majority of the facility utilizing a cart. Able to concentrate with constant interruptions and noise. Handle stressful situations (code calls) 20/25 vision with correction and good hearing.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Receive and transfer hospital telephone calls using the telephone switchboard console.
- Performs routine, emergency and code paging according to established procedures.
- Operate in-house pager systems.
- Professionally pages overhead.
- Briefly explains hospital regulations, such as visiting hours, and department locations, and transfers calls to appropriate department.
- Monitors hospital environment system alarms and security system, and notifies responsible department for corrective action.
- Maintains complete and accurate logs of all telecommunication within the department when needed with legible handwriting.
- Receives and updates additional physicians for patient records.
- Assists patients, visitors, and hospital staff with telephone and paging procedures.
- Maintains a thorough knowledge of departmental and medical center policies and procedures.
- Assists in the training of department staff.
- Performs answering service, for various departments.
- Understanding of ancillary department functions and procedures/protocols.
- Assists with department evaluations.
- Assists with hiring of new employees interviews and selections when requested.
- Maintains availability for call in on all shifts.
- Maintains willingness and ability to learn and perform extra duties as assigned.
- Maintains competency in all position responsibilities.
- Responsible for sorting both in house and the outside mail brought in by the external couriers. Must also deliver mail once a day Monday through Friday between 4 & 5 PM.
- Works as team player with the departments best interest in mind.
