WTLV First Coast News, On Your Side is recruiting an Assignment Desk Editor who is passionate about local news, loves chasing and developing stories, and has solid news judgment. The ideal candidate will have experience in newsgathering, deploying crews, and strong copy-editing skills. This person will join a combined assignment desk and digital team that manages newsroom assignments and oversees the quality of First Coast News content across all platforms.


Responsibilities:

  1. Produce audience-first, engaging content through digital articles, videos, photo galleries, social media, push alerts, live streams, and interactive elements.
  2. Gather and share story updates, tips, and information internally.
  3. Review and respond to news releases, news tips, emails, user-generated content, and social media messages to identify unique, local, and engaging content.
  4. Conduct all necessary reporting efforts to turn information into digital content, such as making calls, getting pictures or video to support a story, and researching and confirming information.
  5. Focus on accuracy and balance in stories through editing and working with reporters.
  6. Work with urgency to publish and broadcast breaking news and update as needed.
  7. Be a leader in editorial meetings and conversations, including pitching stories.
  8. Use digital and social analytics to inform editorial decisions.
  9. Monitor social media for breaking news, find interesting stories, track trends, and report findings to the newsroom.
  10. Work with digital managers, newsroom leaders, and all producers to coordinate the development and distribution of content across all editorial platforms.
  11. Collaborate with other TEGNA stations, CBS affiliates, and other partners to search trending content and publish compelling stories, photos, and videos from our corporate network across web, mobile, and social media platforms.

Requirements:

  1. 2-5 years of experience on an assignment desk or digital team preferred.
  2. Understanding of the tenets of professional journalism.
  3. Organizational skills and the ability to work under constant time pressure deadlines.
  4. Ability to calmly handle live, breaking news situations and changing events.
  5. Experience with content management systems.
  6. Knowledge of Google Analytics, Sharablee, Edius, or ENPS is a plus.
  7. Strong social media skills, including an active news hound presence on Twitter and Facebook.
  8. Basic image and video editing skills preferred.
  9. Knowledge of the AP Stylebook preferred.
  10. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekend, night, and holiday shifts.
  11. Familiarity with Tampa/St. Pete and/or a reason to relocate here will make your application stand out. Please mention in your cover letter.
