The Substitute Music Instructor is an integral member of the STARability Music Academy. This position is crucial in ensuring the efficient and effective day program operation for adults with intellectual disabilities. The role is centered around familiarizing yourself with the Music Academy's daily schedule and stepping in as needed. Duties may include teaching piano, guitar, voice, music theory, music history, and music technology. The substitute instructor will follow lesson plans provided by the absent teacher but should be flexible and able to adapt lessons when necessary. The ideal candidate will be compassionate, resourceful, and committed to fostering an inclusive learning environment.

Essential Job Functions

  • Facilitate and lead music instruction sessions, ensuring a positive and engaging environment for participants of all abilities.
  • Adapt lesson plans and activities to meet the unique needs of participants, promoting inclusion and engagement.
  • Support the STARability Music Academy’s established curriculum while introducing creative approaches to inspire learning.
  • Incorporate music theory fundamentals and practical music skills into sessions in a way that is accessible to all participants.
  • Foster a supportive and encouraging environment that promotes self-expression and confidence.
  • Manage the set-up and cleanup of the studio space, ensuring all instruments and materials are handled with care.
  • Provide updates on participant progress and maintain accurate attendance and session records.
  • Collaborate with other staff members and volunteers to ensure a seamless experience for participants.
  • Adhere to STARability’s policies and procedures, ensuring the safety and well-being of all participants.

Education

Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in Music, Music Therapy, Music Education, or a related field is highly preferred.

Experience

  • Previous experience working with individuals with disabilities is a strong asset.
  • Experience facilitating group instruction in a music or arts environment is desirable.

Skills

  • Proficiency in piano, guitar, and voice.
  • Strong understanding of music theory and music technology and the ability to integrate it into instruction in a creative and accessible way.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect with individuals of diverse abilities.
  • Patience, adaptability, and creativity in responding to participant needs.

Certifications

CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).

Availability

Flexible schedule to accommodate substitute needs during weekdays and occasional evenings or weekends.
