Location: Wigglesworth Hall, Milton Academy Campus, Milton, MA

Hours: Full-time with flexibility to work weeknights if needed

FLSA: Exempt

Classification: Staff (first-semester)

Summary of Position:

Milton Academy is seeking a full-time Instructional Librarian who will become part of the Library Department Team for the first semester of the 2025-26 academic year starting August 18, 2025 through January 30, 2026. This position will report to the Director of Library Services and assist the other librarians in their work.

Please note that this is a one-semester position for the 2025-26 academic year.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Work with faculty and students on research and Reader’s Advisory, coordinating instruction and library usage with teachers.
  • Create interactive, physical and digital displays that engage readers and encourage a culture of reading.
  • Create and update resource guides and multi-format tutorials to assist students with finding materials in the print and digital collection
  • Maintain the fiction and non-fiction collections by weeding older resources and recommending new resources that support and enhance student and faculty interests and learning.

Other Job Functions:

  • Encourage the appropriate use of library facilities.
  • Help establish and maintain a high customer service performance standard.
  • Perform circulation desk duties, including checking collection materials in and out, placing items on reserve and answering patron account questions.
  • Perform other tasks which assist in the use and proper care of the library and its resources and as may be assigned.
  • Outreach to Upper School clubs regarding resources and library displays and space usage.

Supervision to be received: Director of Library Services

Education/Certification/Licensure

Required:

  • A Bachelor’s degree.
  • Current Master’s of Library Science graduate students are encouraged to apply.

Preferred:

  • A Master’s degree in Library Science or related field.

Experience

Required:

  • Library or instructional experience, or be working towards a Master’s of Library Science degree from an ALA or NCATE accredited institution.

Preferred:

  • Library experience in an independent school, and a demonstrated ability to collaborate with faculty.

Competencies

Required:

  • Maintain a current knowledge of library resources, literature and information resources.
  • Demonstrates strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to actively listen and convey information clearly. Capable of engaging with small groups, providing clear directions, and preparing comprehensive notes and reports.
  • Possesses the ability to work independently and efficiently with personal computers, peripheral equipment, and library-specific application programs. Demonstrates competency in navigating digital tools to support library operations and services.
  • Demonstrated computer expertise, including proficiency in Google Workspace, Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Cloud.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external constituencies.
  • Understanding of confidentiality and related issues.
  • Receptive to supervision and professional development.
  • Desire to be a part of a dynamic educational community.

Physical Abilities

Required:

  • Ability to work at a computer for up to 8 hours per day in compliance with OSHA standards.
  • Ability to navigate the Milton Academy campus freely and without physical limitations.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and transport books, supplies, and equipment weighing up to 25-50 pounds as needed.
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods during tasks such as shelving, organizing, or assisting students.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, and reach overhead to shelve books, retrieve materials, and manage library resources.
  • Ability to read fine print on book spines, catalogs, and computer screens for extended periods.
  • Strong auditory and verbal skills for effective listening and clear communication with patrons, staff, and faculty.
