Studio assistants provide hands-on assistance with material and room preparation, set-up, program facilitation, and clean-up for studio, youth and family, and community arts programs.

Requirements and Key Competencies

Must have a high school diploma or general education degree (GED) and a valid driver’s license or other official form of identification. Experience with studio art, art education, and working with the public, including school-aged children preferred. University students enrolled in studio, art history, or art education programs are encouraged to apply.

The employee must also be able to communicate effectively and work successfully with others.

Responsibilities

While candidates will be serving mainly Studio and Family Programs, there may be occasions that necessitate assisting with the Community Arts Programs. Studio and Family Programs for Children, Teens and Adults

Studio programs at CMA are offered for children ages 5 to 16. Studio Assistants in this role will be responsible for supporting lead Teaching Artists in executing studio classes including set up, clean up, and facilitation of lesson plan. Previous classroom management and/or studio experience is desired.

Studio Programs include:

  • In-person Saturday Studio classes (typically 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.)
  • In-person early childhood classes (typically 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., Fridays; excludes summer)
  • In-person Summer Creativity Camps and Teen Summer Studios (Weekday mornings and afternoons)
  • In-person Intergenerational workshops (Wednesday evenings)

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with class set up, preparation, and cleanup of supplies.
  • Communicate with visitors in a friendly, welcoming manner.
  • Help facilitate program activities by engaging, encouraging, and providing instructional support for participating children and their families.
  • Share feedback and/or observations from family programs and children’s classes/workshops with Manager of Youth and Family Engagement
  • Maintain and organize CMA’s studio spaces, storage areas, supplies and resources.
  • Take attendance for studio classes and tally the number of participants to help track program reach.
  • Engage participants in satisfaction surveys during classes as assigned and when appropriate.
  • Anticipate needs as they arise, taking initiative.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Youth and Family Programming

CMA offers a wide variety of youth and family programming. Studio Assistants will help to engage family audiences in social artmaking and community-building creative experiences at CMA. Studio Assistants will communicate gracefully and tactfully with visitors, colleagues, and staff from other community partners and facilitators. Studio Assistants will be thoughtful and encouraging in their approach, modeling play and experimentation with materials and topics related to the CMA’s permanent collection and special exhibitions.

Family Programs include:

  • Play Days (Select Sundays throughout the year; bi-monthly in 2024-2025 and increasing then frequency)
  • Open Studios (Every Sunday, all year)
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with class/event setup, preparation, and cleanup.
  • Greet and welcome visitors into the museum/studio/community environment.
  • Help facilitate program activities by engaging, encouraging, and providing instructional support for participating children and families.
  • Anticipate needs as they arise, taking initiative.
  • Maintain and organize CMA’s studio spaces, storage areas, supplies and resources.
  • Tally the number of participants in each class to help track program reach.
  • Engage participants in satisfaction surveys during classes as assigned and when appropriate.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Hourly wage: $15.00
