Job Description

The Dallas Morning News is looking for a Visual Journalist. The ideal candidate is a versatile storyteller who can capture moments and create photo and video stories. Candidates must have at least one year of experience as a photo or video journalist and demonstrate versatility in covering breaking news, sports, and features. This position includes working nights, weekends, and some holidays.

The visual journalist will work with a group of journalists on the Future of North Texas initiative, which expands The News’ public service journalism with the support of foundations and philanthropy.

The population in North Texas is expected to grow from 8 to 12 million by 2050. The significant increase will challenge various sectors such as education, environment, health, infrastructure, and more. This position will focus on reporting these challenges and exploring potential solutions for our community.

Having a collaborative mindset is key as you will work closely with staff and editors across the room. This role reports to the Deputy Director of Visual Journalism.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Receive daily print and digital assignments from various originating desks and travel to the assigned locations to take pictures.
  2. Record, edit, and produce engaging short and long-form videos for various platforms.
  3. Pitch original ideas and produce independent stories twice a year.
  4. Attend newsworthy events with reporters to take pictures and videos for print, online, and social media platforms.
  5. Edit with a visual editor, write captions, and file images promptly following the standard workflow of the newspaper.
  6. Ability to put subjects at ease for the successful execution of photographs.
  7. Obtain approval from subjects to publish photographs.
  8. Out-of-town travel is required.
  9. Must have a valid driver's license and registered vehicle to travel to assignments.

Job Requirements

SKILLS

  1. Ability to speak and write in Spanish is a major plus for the successful candidate.
  2. Proficient in Adobe Photoshop and Premiere.
  3. Proficient in capturing and editing video.
  4. Understanding of advanced camera operations as well as extensive knowledge of lighting different types of sets.
  5. Must be proficient in using a digital camera in the transmission of photographic images.
  6. Must also be able to demonstrate basic writing skills.
  7. Ability to write accurate, detailed captions.
  8. Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  9. Firm understanding of journalistic ethics.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

  • BFA in photography, photojournalism, or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • This role requires a fair amount of physical activity, as many of the duties are performed outside the office.
  • In addition, candidates must be able to carry 50 pounds of equipment. The job requires repetitive motion while working on the computer and can be exposed to the elements (cold, heat, rain, snow, etc.) while attending outdoor shoots.
