Position Summary
Mesabi Metallics is seeking a Corporate Communications and Public Relations Intern to support both the Corporate Communications and Government Relations teams this summer. This position offers hands-on experience in corporate communications, public relations and government affairs, with a key focus on building brand identity and awareness as the company works towards the commercial operations of its project in Q1 2026. As an intern, you will gain valuable insights into the fields of corporate communications and public relations, the mining industry and regional economic development while contributing to the growth of Mesabi Metallics’ brand presence and public engagement efforts.
The Corporate Communications and Public Relations Intern will be responsible for the following:
Social Media Management:
- Curate content for “Build Mesabi. Build Itasca!” social media platforms (Facebook and Instagram), ensuring consistent and engaging posts that reflect the values and mission of the organization in support of Mesabi Metallics.
- Monitor social media engagement, respond to inquiries and track performance metrics.
- Assist in expanding engagement on Mesabi Metallics’ corporate social media accounts (Facebook, X, LinkedIn and Instagram) by engaging with partner organizations, including but not limited to Hibbing Chamber of Commerce, Hibbing Youth Baseball, Swan Lake Country Club, etc.
- Assist in drafting both internal and external communications, including but not limited to: Press releases, op-eds, letters to the editor, internal newsletters and materials for community outreach initiatives.
- Lead public relations event planning efforts, including coordinating with stakeholder groups, preparing materials, managing press outreach, taking a leadership role with logistics on site and managing follow-up tasks like thank you notes or briefings to leadership.
- Help prepare communication materials, including thank you notes, briefings, fact sheets and talking points for government relations outreach.
- Support stakeholder communication efforts and participate in outreach activities to local communities and government representatives.
- Additional Duties:
- Participate in team meetings to understand strategies and collaborate on various initiatives.
- Assist with administrative tasks and ad-hoc projects as needed, such as cleaning press data bases and organizing media clips.
Skills and Qualifications
- Current student pursuing a degree in Communications, Public Relations, Political Science, Marketing, Graphic Design or a related field.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Familiarity with social media platforms (Facebook, X, LinkedIn, Instagram).
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Interest in public relations, government affairs and the mining industry.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Experience in communications, public relations, social media management or digital marketing.
- Basic graphic design skills (Adobe Creative Suite or Canva).
- Current enrollment in a Bachelor’s degree program in Communications, Public Relations, Political Science, Marketing, Graphic Design or a related field.
