Program:
Division of Science and Research (DSR)
Program Description:
The function of the DSR is to help ensure that the Department's decision-making is based upon the best possible scientific and technical information. The role of this Division is to provide the Department with, and access to, expertise and information that supports its technical and policy needs. In addition, the Division performs research to meet the information and problem-solving needs, identifies and understands emerging issues that require the Department's attention and advocates/integrates the multi-disciplinary perspective into the Department's identification, analysis, and resolution of environmental issues.
Project Description:
The summer intern will work closely with DEP scientists on designing, creating, and releasing media conveying the scientific projects conducted in DSR and with their partners. This includes, but is not limited to, the creation of social media posts, graphics supporting documents meant for internal and/or public release, and postmasters for internal DSR monthly seminars. The intern will be able to shadow different scientists on a variety of projects in the field, laboratory, and office to find inspiration for content. The intern will work with the DSR Outreach Team to increase our social media presence.
Specific to the Position:
Current undergraduate student or recent graduate with a background in biological and environmental sciences or related fields with a strong interest in science communication. The ability to communicate science with non-technical jargon will be expected. Experience with CANVA, Instagram, or other related platforms is preferred.
Preferred Area of Study:
Biology, Environmental Science, Chemistry, or related Science.
License:
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Residency:
All persons newly hired on or after September 1, 2011 have one year from the date of employment to establish, and then maintain principal residence in the State of New Jersey subject to the provisions of N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L.2011, Chapter 70), also known as the "New Jersey First Act".
Authorization to Work:
Selected candidates must be authorized to work in the United States per the Department of Homeland Security, United States Citizenship and Immigration Services regulations. Note: The State of New Jersey does not provide sponsorship for citizenship to the United States.
