Base pay range

$36.00/hr - $44.00/hr

Type: Contract (W2 only)

Start Date: 2/17/2025

End Date: 8/15/2025 (with potential for extension and/or Full Time conversion)

Location: Newark, NJ (HYBRID position; onsite Tuesday-Thursday each week)

Position Summary

Our client is seeking an Associate (Health) Editor (contractor) to report to their Executive Director, Features. The Associate (Health) Editor will work alongside a team of editors to brainstorm, assign, and edit feature stories for their consumer audience. This position requires basic medical knowledge; solid editing, writing, and interviewing skills; attention to detail; ability to meet tight deadlines; and the ability to collaborate with a large Content team in a fast-moving environment.

Responsibilities

  1. Brainstorm, assign, and edit consumer-facing articles that appeal to a relevant and sometimes niche audience.
  2. Work closely with Social Media and Marketing teams to create interesting content.
  3. Work with operations teams to get content published promptly.
  4. Find new, fresh, and creative angles to stories about various health conditions.
  5. Support the Executive Editor on special projects.

Requirements

  1. Bachelor's degree in English, Biology, or other relevant area (preferred) -OR- equivalent professional experience.
  2. At least 4 years of experience in health content editing.
  3. Experience assigning clearly-defined story ideas to freelancers.
  4. High productivity evidenced in the ability to meet deadlines.
  5. Ability to edit stories for accuracy, balance, timeliness, and relevance.
  6. High reliability and ability to take direction and run with it.
  7. Flexibility and creativity to meet the needs of a growing multimedia news team in a competitive environment.
  8. Detail-oriented and deadline-focused with solid proofreading skills.
  9. Ability to clearly and succinctly translate medical jargon and academic speak to a lay audience.
  10. Medical knowledge (preferred).
  11. Familiarity with Google Suite and publishing systems (preferred).
