The Deputy General Counsel provides strategic legal guidance and operational support across a broad range of financial, regulatory, and business matters for the credit union and its subsidiaries. The Deputy General Counsel manages complex contract negotiations, counsels on product initiatives and regulatory requirements, and mentors junior legal talent.

What you will do here :

  • Regulatory and Compliance Expertise: Provide strategic legal counsel on banking laws, payments law, and financial services regulations, including as applicable to fintech service providers. Support relationships with and requirements of key regulators, ensuring compliance with existing and emerging regulatory requirements impacting the business. Guide the organization in navigating complex regulatory landscapes, particularly in payments and banking innovations.
  • Contract Negotiation and Business Support: Lead and oversee complex commercial contract negotiations, ensuring terms align with strategic business objectives and legal risk appetite. Provide hands-on support and guidance to cross-functional teams including product, marketing, and operations on legal risks and issues affecting business initiatives.
  • Leadership and Mentorship: Serve as a trusted advisor to the General Counsel, senior executives, and business leaders. Mentor and train junior lawyers, fostering a culture of growth, collaboration, and excellence within the legal team. Set best practices for legal processes and policies, ensuring alignment with company goals and legal standards.
  • Product and Marketing Counseling: Advise on the legal implications of new product launches, marketing campaigns, and other customer-facing initiatives. Collaborate with internal stakeholders to ensure compliance with advertising, consumer protection, and data privacy laws.
  • Corporate Governance and Risk Management: Partner with the General Counsel to manage corporate governance matters, including board and committee documentation. Identify, assess, and mitigate legal risks, while maintaining a forward-thinking approach to emerging industry trends. Establish a strong partnership with Risk and Compliance functions to support risk framework.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

What you will need :

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school; admission to at least one U.S. state bar required.
  • 12+ years of legal expertise, with a strong preference for in-house legal roles within financial institutions, FinTech, or payments companies required.
  • 5+ years of leadership experience required.
  • Deep expertise in banking laws, payments regulations, and financial services compliance required.
  • Strong negotiation skills and the ability to handle high-stakes, complex contracts with precision and efficiency required.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trust and credibility across all levels of the organization required.
  • Experience working with federal and state regulators required.
  • Proven ability to manage and resolve complex legal issues in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. Seasoned business acumen with the ability to distill complex legal requirements into actionable advice designed to further strategic business objectives required.
  • Proven ability to establish strong cross-functional business partnerships required.
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring junior attorneys and fostering team growth required.
  • Prior law firm experience is a plus, but a strong preference for candidates with significant in-house experience required.
  • Capacity to handle multiple priorities and adapt to changing demands with professionalism and poise required.
  • Member of the Arizona Bar (in good standing) required.
  • Admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of the State of Arizona, and all other Arizona State Courts required.
  • Admitted to practice in the District of Arizona required.

Eligible to be admitted to practice pro hac vice in the federal and state courts of other jurisdictions required.
