Summary of Position

Newsday has an opening for an Editorial Writer and member of the editorial board. This job requires an experienced journalist able to select topics, produce fact-based opinions and state them clearly and engagingly. At daily board meetings, he or she should be comfortable expressing strong opinions and when necessary, challenging consensus while also being mindful that the editorial board has a collegial decision-making process.

The candidate should be a keen observer of Long Island - its institutions, residents and lifestyles.

Essential Duties & Functions

  • Analyze fairly and comment insightfully on a wide range of issues influencing the lives of our readers including those debated in legislatures, discussed at home and emerging online.
  • Contribute regularly to The Point, the Opinion department's daily newsletter about politics and policy.
  • Collaborate on projects for nextLIi, a digital community, featuring nonpartisan data, research and information about Long Island.
  • Contribute ideas to grow readership and connect with new and underserved audiences on community platforms.
  • Conceptualize editorial content for creative digital storytelling.
  • Monitor metrics to better understand our audience


Essential Job Knowledge & Skills
  • Bachelor's degree essential.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
  • 4 to 6 years' experience reporting and writing, preferably with a focus on commentary.
  • Copy-editing skills required.
  • Extensive knowledge of Long Island/New York politics, economy and culture.


Compensation

  • The annual salary range for this position is $95,000 - $100,000.


Physical Requirements
  • Employees are generally required to work in the office and/or out in the field a minimum of three (3) days per week.
