Boundary County Communication Specialist - Temporary

Location: Bonners Ferry, Idaho

Position # SH01om: Communication Specialist - Temporary

Department: Sheriff

Starting Wage: $21.23

Typical Work Hours: 40 hours per week, various shifts. Must work weekends and holidays as required.

Job Summary:

Monitors radios and answers telephones, including the 911 system, and relays accurate and pertinent information to the appropriate agency or agencies necessary to ensure a rapid and effective response. Enters data on all wanted, missing or runaway persons, protection orders, vehicles, stolen firearms, and other information into a nationwide law enforcement database, and provides information to law enforcement officers in the field on license registration, warrants, and dangerous suspects to ensure officer safety.

Salary Increase: Upon obtaining POST Dispatch Academy certification, salary will increase by $0.50 an hour.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Experience in computer operation, data processing, and general office skills.
  2. Education or experience in law enforcement practices and procedures preferred.
  3. Must pass ILETS / NCIC entry and inquiry test within six months of employment and maintain ILETS certification annually.
  4. Must attend a two-week Basic POST Dispatch Academy during the first year of employment and a one-week advanced POST Dispatch Academy within 36 months of employment.
  5. Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, a clear, strong voice, and the ability to remain composed and professional under extremely stressful situations.
  6. Must have strong organizational skills and the ability to perform numerous tasks simultaneously with constant interruption.
  7. Must be able to work with minimal supervision and possess above-average ability to gather information from various sources, render a rapid decision as to the most effective response, and communicate information accurately yet concisely.
  8. Must be able to remain on-station for extended periods, ensuring that the communications center does not go un-staffed.

Subject to attending various classes and seminars throughout the year, some involving spending nights away from home.

Minimum Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
