GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Senior Medical Writer-Editor in Graduate Medical Education (GME) is a key team member for supporting the American Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)–accredited residency and fellowship training programs at Henry Ford Health. The Senior Medical Writer-Editor is responsible for medical writing and editing activities including responsibility for leadership, direction, scope, and organization in consultation with the Manager-Medical Writing, Editing and Education, senior leadership, physicians, researchers, statisticians, and other team members as appropriate.

This position has an educational mission to support physician trainees and faculty in their execution of scholarly activity. It includes writing, editing, advising, and consulting authors on a range of medical communications topics and may include a variety of projects, including research manuscripts, case reports, grants, correspondence, poster presentations, and others. Works on numerous projects within a wide scope of topics; thus, in addition to expertise in medical and scientific communications, flexibility, a dedication to teamwork, excellent interpersonal skills, and effective project management skills are required.

The Senior Medical Writer-Editor demonstrates initiative, responsibility, honesty, and resourcefulness while working independently under minimal supervision. A sincere commitment to educating and improving the professional development of residents and fellows in GME is foundational to this role. Maintains strict privacy in handling large amounts of confidential health information. A commitment to ongoing development is essential, and a good sense of humor is also highly valued.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Under the supervision of the GME Manager-Medical Writing, Editing and Education and the Designated Institutional Official, independently writes and edits a variety of written projects for the medical and scientific community.
  • Manages the development and timely completion of documents and reviews projects for adherence to Medical Writing style and processes.
  • Directs individual projects and groups of projects for clients (residents, fellows, faculty, GME team).
  • Directly interacts with clients and provides recommendations/consultation/summaries regarding scientific-medical content for all written communications.
  • Reviews all written materials to ensure they are of high quality, scientifically accurate, and meet company standards.
  • Supports educational research project preparation and study design, including IRB protocol preparation and submission.
  • Maintains accurate records of projects and outcomes as well as an annual summary of accomplishments.
  • Advises authors on current Medical Writing and Inclusive and Patient-Centered language standards and guidelines and ensures that written content aligns with Henry Ford Health Principles and Values.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Advanced scientific degree (PhD or Masters).
  • Five (5) or more years of scientific/medical writing experience with publication credits and a demonstrated record of success.
  • High-level knowledge of Medical Writing-Editing key concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Ability to understand and interpret clinical/scientific data and communicate its significance to a variety of audiences.
  • Must have strong written, verbal, interpersonal communication, and relationship-building skills.
  • Experience with the peer-reviewed publications process.
  • Fluency working in Microsoft Word with track changes.
  • Working knowledge of office programs (Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat Pro) and online meeting platforms (Webex, Zoom!).
  • Experience with citation manager tools preferred, but not required (e.g., EndNote).
  • Ability to use online scientific research tools (e.g., PubMed).
  • Must have strong project management skills and the ability to advance several projects simultaneously.
  • Familiarity with AMA style and Inclusive Language guidelines/policies at journals.
  • Ability to work in a cross-functional team environment.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:

  • Required: At least one or more of the following certificate programs completed, in process, or be willing to start: American Medical Writers Association Essential Skills or Medical Editing certificate and/or a university-based medical writing/editing certificate (e.g., University of Chicago, University of San Diego Extension, etc.).
  • Desired: Interest in pursuing advanced credentialed certification (Editor in the Life Sciences [ELS], Medical Writer Certified [MWC], or Certified Medical Publications Professional [CMPP]).
