About This Role
Christ Church Anglican is a program sized parish in Midland, Texas. We are a vibrant, multi-generational congregation that highly values beautiful, and reverential worship services. We seek a full time Director of Music Ministries who will lead us in building a joyful and robust music culture reflected in our programs including the development of an excellent choral program for adults as well as children and youth. The musical style at Christ Church is blended: our parish appreciates well executed, traditional Anglican music as well as familiar, readily singable hymnody from other Christian traditions, and songs from the contemporary music culture as well. The successful candidate will have a deep Christian faith, strong skills in choral and instrumental direction, the ability to recruit vocalists and instrumentalists and demonstrate a collegial spirit. The work at Christ Church should be seen as a ministry for the glorification of God and the strengthening of discipleship among God’s people. We seek someone who is called by God to this vocation.
The role of Director of Music Ministry, is to lead all aspects of the worship life within Christ Church, which involves envisioning, equipping, and mobilizing the musical talents of volunteers. The Director of Music Ministry, shepherds’ people in authentic worship through the experience of music and also assists in the creative efforts of the church.
Primary Responsibilities and Tasks
Worship Planning
- Plan music for all services.
- Provide music information for service bulletins.
- Lead and guide the congregation as appropriate to enable musical participation. We believe the congregation is the choir, and efforts are directed to empower this group to engage in musical worship.
Organ and Piano
- Provide organ/piano music for the weekly 8:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. services.
- Organ experience preferred, but not required.
- Play for funerals and weddings as needed.
- Play for seasonal special services (e.g. Christmas, Holy Week, Easter, Evensongs, etc.)
- Proficient in improvisation to provide smooth, flowing transitions when extra time is needed during service (Communion, etc.).
Instrumental Ensemble
- In addition to organ and piano, be willing and able to recruit and participate in a volunteer instrumental ensemble including string, wind, and brass instruments (whatever is recruited) that enriches our worship and enhances various traditions of music.
Adult Choir
- Recruit section leaders (paid or appropriate volunteers) ensuring there are at least four at all times.
- Recruit people for the choir from congregation and community.
- Conduct the Adult Choir caring for its members by planning music and leading rehearsals. In addition to Sunday morning choral direction, the Director leads a weekly rehearsal as well as special services or concerts.
Youth and Children’s Choir
- Form and lead a Youth Choir (middle school and high schoolers) that may sing alone or with the Adult Choir as appropriate.
- Form and lead a Children’s Choir that may sing alone or with the Adult Choir as appropriate.
- Assist the staff with children’s music programming.
