POSITION SUMMARY

Twin Cities PBS ("TPT") is currently hiring for part-time intermittent Audio Engineers. This role works to coordinate and execute sound recording in field and studio productions. This is an IBEW Union position. Candidates are scheduled as needed, based on project needs.

Work Environment: Candidates must live in or be willing to relocate to the Twin Cities Metro area and report to onsite office.

Rate of Pay: This role is paid per the IBEW union scale with a minimum of $29.50/hour.

MAJOR AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

FIELD AUDIO (60% of time)

  1. Using TPT’s field recording equipment, capture audio in the field for use in a wide variety of television content; ensure that all audio meets TPT’s high production standards and supports the project’s needs.
  2. Operate field recorders, mixers, microphones, booms, time code generators, slates and related audio gear; apply mastery of the equipment and techniques to ensure the best possible product.
  3. Consult with producers about the production’s technical and aesthetic requirements; advise producers on the best decisions to achieve productions goals.
  4. Assess the acoustics of the production area, share insights and ideas with the producer and operate the necessary equipment to determine the sound requirements and results.
  5. Collaborate with the production team to ensure all audio needs are fulfilled.

STUDIO AUDIO (30% of time)

  1. Operate mixing console and related equipment for live productions, including broadcast television, live events, and music performances; apply mastery of the equipment and techniques to ensure the best possible product.
  2. Place and operate microphones for optimum sound transmission for recording or live mixing.
  3. Operate IFB, comm systems, and other studio-based audio tools used in production.
  4. Record multitrack sound for postproduction.
  5. Troubleshoot and fix technical challenges to the transmission of the audio signal.
  6. Professionally and appropriately communicate with talent, performers, crew members, and guests to TPT.

OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED (10% of time)

  1. Participate as an active member of the Production Services team; contribute to shared goals and collaborate with colleagues on achievement of priorities.
  2. Monitor the condition of technical facilities; report needed maintenance and recommend upgrades/improvements that would improve performance.
  3. Complete all production-related paperwork (e.g. work-order sign-offs, repair requests, audio reports, etc.).
  4. Keep abreast of technical developments related to audio production.

Required Experience

  1. High School Diploma.
  2. Minimum 3 years experience in professional audio mixing and field recording.

Preferred Experience

  1. Bachelor’s Degree.
  2. Minimum 5 years experience in professional audio sweetening and field recording.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1. Expert ability to operate audio recording equipment and related gear (e.g. mixing consoles, digital recorders, microphones, playback equipment, timecode generators, electronic slates, etc.).
  2. Expert knowledge of sound recording and sound transmission.
  3. Strong audio communication skills; ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with all team members.
  4. Strong focus on audience and end user needs; ability to collaborate with content personnel on project expectations.
  5. Strong organizational and time management skills; ability to multitask in a fast-paced, time sensitive production environment.
  6. Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  7. Commitment to advancing Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility (IDEA) priorities within the organization.
  8. Ability to travel to locations in the greater metro area on a frequent basis; occasional travel throughout Minnesota and outside the state.
