This position is responsible for providing excellent customer service to library patrons and internal customer service to city departments and other library sections. It is essential that the person in this position be an outstanding representative of the library’s mission and values. The person in this position must have a basic knowledge of the principles of reference and information services. The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.
Responsibilities:
- Staff library service points, performing general library and other related tasks at each.
- Be approachable and available to patrons, with an investment in the positive outcome of each interaction.
- Perform user-focused tasks including assisting with patron accounts and access to library collections and services, as well as providing referrals to appropriate library collections, services, and staff.
- Maintain, re-stock, and organize assigned areas, including routing and reshelving returned materials.
- Support library programming and promotional efforts.
- Perform processing of incoming and outgoing library materials.
- Manage time efficiently while working independently doing routine, repetitive tasks.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent required. Any combination of experience and education which provides the applicant with the level of required knowledge and abilities will be considered.
Preferred Qualifications:
- One year of experience working in customer service.
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
- At least one year of library experience or working in customer service in a library.
- Experience in cash-handling.
Knowledge of:
- Staff roles and the library’s mission and role in the community.
- The ethics and values of libraries and the library profession, which includes knowledge of the Library Bill of Rights and the ALA code of Ethics.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of library records and information.
- The Dewey Decimal System.
- Knowledge and experience with Library's ILS, SirsiDynix Symphony WorkFlows.
- Springshare Cloud Software for Libraries.
- The City/County library policies and procedures.
- Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Skills:
- Using computers, e-readers, tablets, and other personal electronic devices.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to multi-task.
Abilities:
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to work with limited supervision.
- Ability to manage time effectively.
- Type 40 wpm.
