What You'll Do in This Position

Manager of the Mechanical/Plant Design Engineering section of Design Engineering. Primary responsibilities include: recruit, select, and assign appropriately skilled personnel and provide adequate resources to meet departmental objectives. Support staffing requirements from division plans and requirements of various design groups, establish staffing plans, external hiring strategies, and recruiting plans. Negotiates release and internal reassignment of discipline personnel. Ensure the performance of all personnel administrative functions, i.e., salary planning, performance appraisal. Maintain technical excellence by providing for career development professional advancement, and cross-discipline programs for Engineering personnel by planning and mentoring individuals' training programs. Serve as mentor; develop internal training programs; and locate and obtain budget support for off-site training. Establish and direct programmatic activities for technical development, design productivity, and quality objectives; analyze organizational, technical, and business operations to identify needs and opportunities; develop program plan and budget requirements; obtain managerial approval and financial support for programs and manage programs to objectives. Maintain technical excellence by establishing a self-assessment review of discipline technical design products of Site and external sources to identify and correct deficient performance, and through technical reviews and QlTs of key and sampled design work processes and products. Resolve technical project issues by analyzing issues to determine specific elements requiring resolution; locating required expertise intemally or externally; and, in some cases, reformulating a solution. Plan and develop discipline technical standards at the department, division, and industry levels. Participate in Department, Division, and National Codes, Standards, and Specification Committees. Participate in formal Design Review groups. Provide technical instruction to design project and discipline engineers to achieve required performance, cost, and quality objectives through technical meetings, written instructions, and formal documented off-project analysis of work scopes, design packages, calculations, and Conceptual Design Reports. Perform analysis of problems to identify root-cause and unfavorable trends. Interface with Senior Management, DOE-SR, DOE-HQ, and DNFSB as required on key technical issues.

Other Qualifications

Bachelors Degree in the technical field pertaining to the assigned discipline

Substantial cumulative experience in engineering/management practices or equivalent experience

Understanding of design theory and process of multiple disciplines and required to provide technical guidance to group

Experience as a
• Chemical Engineer
• Mechanical Engineer
• Nuclear Engineer

Must be able to obtain and/or maintain a security clearance, if required.

Qualifications We Desire

Engineering principles and practices used in Chemical, Mechanical, and Nuclear disciplines pertaining to the Nuclear and/or Chemical industry. Working knowledge of these disciplines supervising professionals performing analysis using state of the art analysis techniques. Working knowledge of Nuclear Facilities and familiarity of Commercial Engineering Practices that can be applied at SRS is required.
