School Overview: Washington Yu Ying Public Charter School was founded in 2008 by a small group of parents dedicated to establishing a world-class Chinese immersion school in the District of Columbia. Chinese–spoken by one in five people worldwide–is an important language for American children to learn. As such, Yu Ying provides students with global competencies to prepare them for success in the real world. Since its founding, Yu Ying has been the only school of its kind in the D.C. area.
Together with families and communities, Yu Ying is working to provide an engaging, inquiry-driven, Chinese–English dual language immersion environment to nurture tomorrow's global leaders who are confident in their ability to read, write, and think in Chinese and English languages and have intercultural understanding and respect.
Position Overview: The Librarian at Washington Yu Ying Public Charter School plays a vital role in fostering a love for literature and inquiry-based learning within a Chinese language immersion environment. This individual serves all Yu Ying students across both campuses, primarily focusing on the elementary school and expanding to Early Years programming in phase two. The Librarian collaborates with educators, students, and staff to provide educational leadership, manage the school library, and support the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) curriculum.
Essential Responsibilities, including but not limited:
Library Program Development- Lead the development of a comprehensive library collection for students from Grades K-5 (Phase 1), Daycare & PreK (Phase 2) with an emphasis on diverse, high-quality texts in English, Chinese, and other mother tongues.
- Ensure the library supports the IB PYP Units of Inquiry and promotes literacy and critical thinking skills.
- Plan and execute literacy-related events in both English and Chinese, fostering a love for reading and cultural appreciation.
- Develop flexible scheduling, including specials classes, drop-ins, and special projects to meet diverse student and teacher needs.
- Serve as an advisor and consultant to teachers to integrate library resources into classroom instruction.
- Collaborate with teachers to design and deliver professional development sessions to strengthen curriculum connections.
- Promote children's literature and recreational reading through guided reading recommendations and genre exploration in print and digital formats.
- Develop and implement information literacy programs aligned with the IB inquiry cycle and PYP standards.
- Support the PYP Exhibition and other culminating projects through research mentorship and resource guidance.
- Oversee library operations, including circulation, cataloguing, and processing of resources.
- Ensure cataloguing standards are aligned across campuses, training support staff as necessary.
- Create and maintain a collection development policy, addressing gaps, weeding outdated materials, and maintaining budgetary records.
- Work with local suppliers and vendors to procure high-quality resources.
- Demonstrate deep knowledge of the PYP framework and curriculum initiatives.
- Advocate for the library's role in supporting inquiry-based learning and fostering student agency.
- Develop and assess strategies to measure the library's impact on teaching and learning outcomes.
- Participate in and occasionally lead school-wide professional development and cross-departmental collaborations.

- Perform other duties as assigned by the Elementary and/or Early Years Principal.
Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Library Science, Education, or equivalent qualification preferred
- Experience in an IB World School environment, preferably with the PYP.
- Proficiency in English and Mandarin Chinese literacy resources
- Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with educators and lead professional development.
- Familiarity with cataloguing systems and library management tools.
