Join the Picador team at FSG and explore the infinite wonders of backlist publishing. We’re looking for an Associate Editor who will collaborate across departments and help rediscover, reinvent, develop, and ensure the lively and enduring success of our celebrated backlist. The successful candidate will have a voracious appetite for books of all kinds and a talent for making recommendations– a kind of matchmaker for books and their (sometimes unsuspecting) ideal readers. They will use their deep knowledge of literature and of the contemporary literary marketplace to identify lesser known treasures, commission new material, and propose packaging updates. This position combines project management, idea generation, copywriting, and publishing strategy, offering the chance to develop a range of skills as well as a rare and exciting view into a key element of our industry.
The ideal candidate would be able to come into the office on an as needed basis.
What you'll do:
- Research the FSG archive and jumpstart ideas for possible reissues.
- Commission and edit new material for reissues, negotiate contracts for reissues and new material, and research trends and competition.
- Keep books on schedule by ensuring production and marketing deadlines are met.
- Collaborate with colleagues in other departments, especially production, design, sales, and marketing.
- Help manage the Picador list, including reissues and some reprints, by writing launch materials, catalog, and cover copy, reviewing seasonal title information sheets, and presenting at launch and sales conference.
What you'll bring:
- Broad, deep knowledge of contemporary and twentieth century literature from around the world and a demonstrated commitment to the literary community.
- General understanding of the marketplace for books and a curiosity about audiences, as well as what contributes to the long life of a paperback.
- Exceptional writing skills.
- Experience working with a team, communicating in a highly professional manner, and managing a variety of needs and perspectives.
- Creative problem solving and a motivation to learn.
- Attention to detail, ability to prioritize, delight in completion.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel and a general aptitude for technology.
This role will have an annual salary of $55,000 - $60,000.
