Librarian I - New Rochelle Public Library

Position Overview: The New Rochelle Public Library is seeking an enthusiastic Librarian I / School-Age Outreach Librarian to support children in grades K-5. This role focuses on fostering relationships with students, families, and educators to promote and develop library services for school-age children under the guidance of the Head of Children’s Services and Assistant Children’s Room Supervisor.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate library, school, and virtual visits, creating materials for staff use in your absence.
  • Collaborate with parents and school staff to enhance library services and develop new programs.
  • Attend community events to promote library services and create library cards.
  • Provide programs for day camps, after-school programs, and community groups.
  • Develop engaging programs with Children’s Room staff to encourage regular library visits.
  • Promote Summer Reading and connect with schools to encourage participation.
  • Build relationships with teachers and administrators to stay informed on curriculum needs.
  • Oversee the Homework Help program and supervise tutors.
  • Manage the K-5 materials budget for library resources.
  • Collaborate with the Teen Services Librarian to ensure smooth transitions for young library users.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited program.
  • New York State Public Librarian’s professional certificate.
  • New York State residency is required.
  • Strong knowledge of children’s literature and current trends in Children’s Librarianship.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to build relationships with educators and the community.
  • Organized, self-motivated, and able to handle multiple tasks.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Evergreen or similar systems, and online tools (Google Workspace).

Compensation: Starting salary: $61,679 - $74,237, depending on experience. Full benefits package including medical, dental, and NYS Retirement System pension plan.
