RESEARCH IMPACT LIBRARIAN
Galter Health Sciences Library & Learning Center (GHSL) at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine seeks a Research Impact Librarian. This position will work as part of Galter Library’s Research Assessment and Communications department to support individuals and groups in their understanding, assessment, visualization, and reporting of impactful outcomes of research and clinical care efforts. The department provides advisory services for researchers, groups, departments, and centers on topics such as: managing or tracking publications, maintaining an impactful online identity, measuring or assessing research impact by discipline, communicating research impact to diverse audiences, or developing successful publishing and dissemination strategies. Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience, minimum $65,000
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develops and delivers training sessions, online guides, and consultations on publication tracking, bibliometrics and citation analysis, communicating research impact, online research profiles, or topics more broadly related to scholarly communications (e.g., open access, author rights, etc.).
- Performs bibliometric analyses using publication- and citation-based statistics to provide researchers and administrators with an in-depth understanding of scholarly impact for program review, grant applications and renewals, and recruitment and retention.
- Supports workflows to collect, preserve, and disseminate faculty, staff, and student intellectual output through the institutional repository, research information management system, and other digital means.
- Provides reference services to medical school faculty, students, and affiliated clinical researchers.
- Develops and sustains relationships with faculty, students, research centers, and professional networks to foster collaboration, identify service needs, and enhance awareness of library resources and research impact tools.
- Contributes to library-wide planning activities and collaborates with colleagues on projects in areas of shared interest, when appropriate.
- Attends faculty and student research seminars, department wide conferences, and university symposia to keep abreast of current research. Serves on university and library committees as appropriate.
- Participates in scholarly societies, attends academic conferences, and represents the library in relevant academic activities. Keeps abreast of current developments and trends of scholarly publishing and communications, bibliometrics and alternative metrics, and best practices in digital scholarship.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES:
- Master’s degree in library information science, data science, informatics, or assessment from an accredited program or international equivalent, or other appropriate degree or equivalent experience.
- Demonstrated experience providing instructional and reference services including the creation of online tutorials, surveys, or guides.
- Proficiency with bibliographic and citation databases (including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar) and awareness of alternative sources of information about research outputs.
- Proficiency with Excel or other spreadsheet/reporting platforms.
- Demonstrated ability to work creatively and collaboratively as part of a team.
- A proactive and service-oriented approach to outreach, with enthusiasm for networking, relationship-building, and community engagement.
- Ability to contribute to teams with a demonstrated commitment to collaboration and communication with both internal and external collaborators.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES:
- Interest or training in relevant topic areas, including research impact metrics, bibliometrics, and relevant related resources (e.g., ORCID, Metrics Toolkit, InCites by Clarivate Analytics, VOSviewer) or interest in pursuing professional training on these topics.
- Interest or training in topics related to data analysis, data visualization, or other complementary areas (either in formal credit-bearing courses or in MOOC-style experiences).
