Job Opportunities

Under the direction of the Library Director, the Library Aide assists patrons in all aspects of library use, including answering reference questions, providing computer and technological support, shelving items according to library standards, and collecting fines and fees. Manage the physical collection as directed by the supervisory staff, and maintain patron records.

Responsibilities

  • Check books in and out using the computerized circulation system. Renew items and place holds.
  • Assist patrons with finding materials. Answer phone inquiries and notify patrons of available material.
  • Shelve items according to established library rules.
  • Collect fines and fees and record all monies collected; make change.
  • Take applications for library cards and enter patron information in the system.
  • Assist patrons with the use of computers, printers, scanner, copier, fax, and microfilm reader.
  • Prepare books for shelving. Repair damaged items.
  • Assist other staff with preparing displays.
  • Assist at children’s story times and with the summer reading programs.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Able to take direction and follow through as instructed. Willing to work as scheduled.
  • Knowledge of basic computer programs including the use of word processing programs and Internet use. Ability to learn new software programs.
  • Willingness to work with all types of patrons.
  • Ability to organize materials according to alphanumeric systems and other markings used by the library.
  • Able to shelve and retrieve books stored at floor level to seven feet above floor level. Able to lift moderately heavy weights. Able to stand for extended periods of time to assist patrons at the circulation desk or computers. Able to frequently move from one physical location to another to assist patrons.

The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, and bend. Applicants must regularly lift up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift up to 30 pounds without assistance.

Post-Offer Employment Testing (POET), including but not limited to drug screening and a criminal background check will be required.
