General Position Summary
Under the direction of the Branch Assistant and the supervision of the Library Department Supervisor, the Library Substitute performs clerical and para-professional responsibilities in the operation of a Branch Library on a substitute or limited-hours basis.
Essential Functions
The following duties may not be all-inclusive, and other responsibilities may be assigned:
Stay updated on library policies and procedures, especially those related to branch libraries.
Assist with programs for children, teens, and adults.
Provide courteous and friendly assistance to patrons, including helping locate materials, access information, and use library computers and online materials.
Offer assistance to patrons with impairments by helping them find suitable materials.
Notify patrons about reserved, overdue, or damaged materials efficiently and courteously.
Maintain daily library usage statistics.
Handle the check-out and return of library materials, including issuing library cards to eligible patrons.
Work with coworkers to keep the library environment neat and welcoming, including maintaining bookshelves, desks, furnishings, and displays.
Report any emergencies or maintenance issues to the appropriate authority.
Assist the Branch Assistant in removing worn or outdated materials from the collection.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position does not include supervisory responsibilities.

Education, Certification, & Experience
High school diploma or GED, or one to three months of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Valid Driver’s License.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Language Skills: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Strong verbal communication skills for working with patrons and staff.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations, including handling American currency and basic unit measurements.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense and follow detailed but straightforward written or oral instructions. Ability to address problems with limited variables in a standardized setting.
Computer Skills: Proficiency in web browsers, Outlook 365 Webmail, Polaris Integrated Library System, and Microsoft Word.
