Position Summary:

The Principal Laser Engineer (PLE) is responsible for defining, designing, and developing laser welding, cutting, ablation, and marking equipment and processes using lasers within the Cirtec Medical portfolio. The PLE owns efforts in developing solutions to product design and design for manufacturability, translating requirements from the customer into realized processes and products. The PLE will manage multiple projects while exceeding customer commitments and lead the design efforts for programs, acting as a technical lead and mentor to other engineers.

This position is responsible for providing hands-on training for process development and manufacturing methods to the Laser team. The PLE will develop processes for each production job, set up, and monitor production, assisting the team in developing programs, tooling, fixtures, and parameters for production. Training will be provided to ensure production meets Cirtec’s quality and efficiency specifications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development team and laser team.
  • Develop innovative laser solutions, investigate, and analyze new processes.
  • Develop, log, and maintain process recipes for laser applications.
  • Support engineering development activities, sales support, and customer applications.
  • Design, develop, and test laser prototypes, modules, and systems including optical layouts, components, and equipment for advanced manufacturing methods.
  • Coordinate the installation and final acceptance of the laser system.
  • Lead a team of Associate Engineers and Technicians and conduct independent research and development in the field of new laser material processing technologies.
  • Generate and demonstrate new ideas and approaches in laser processing and develop them into commercial processes and applications.
  • Lead customer-oriented projects resulting in next-generation capabilities.
  • Conduct numerical analysis of laser technologies; visualize, interpret, and explain the results; communicate conclusions to the team; develop experimental methods to verify theoretical results.
  • Promote and develop laser processes within the Cirtec portfolio.
  • Set up production parameters and ensure documentation and maintenance.
  • Develop characterizations, IQs, OQs, PQs, and validations.
  • Execute automated laser processing capabilities.
  • Troubleshoot laser processes and equipment.
  • Provide process training to improve quality, throughput, and safety.
  • Provide laser samples to support sales efforts.
  • Assist in developing laser quotations and manufacturing procedures.
  • Interface with Quality to develop inspection procedures for component acceptability.
  • Maintain and promote laser and team safety.
  • Research and recommend capital equipment for the yearly budget.
  • Reliable, consistent, and punctual attendance is essential.
  • Comply with company, quality, and safety standards, policies, and procedures.

Must Have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline.
  • 10 years of laser experience required, or a combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in an engineering environment with mechanical, tool design, and manufacturing processes.
  • Expertise with SolidWorks, CAD/CAM, CNC, G-code programming.
  • Familiarity with modern statistical methods.
  • Strong professional communication and problem-solving abilities.
  • Technical report preparation and good small group presentation skills.
  • Fluent in reading, writing, and speaking English.

Good to have:

  • Previous medical device industry experience.

Competitive market salary from $125,000 to $150,000 per year depending on qualifications and experience.
