Job Description
We are seeking a dynamic, seasoned media relations and public relations professional who excels at holistic, complex strategic planning. This individual should instinctively know how to connect the dots to drive brainstorms, cultivate valuable media opportunities, and produce executive-ready written material that informs and advances ALSAC’s business priorities of revenue growth, reputation protection, and positive brand positioning.
Key Responsibilities:
- Strategic Leadership: Develop and lead comprehensive media relations and PR strategies that align with organizational goals and drive impactful results. Initiate and follow through on projects with minimal direction, even in ambiguous situations. Recommend and utilize internal and external assets to enhance the St. Jude brand with target audiences.
- Extensive Media Network: Maintain a robust network of media contacts across digital, print, podcast, and broadcast platforms. Cultivate and sustain these relationships for future storytelling opportunities.
- Analytical Skills: Utilize strong analytical skills to monitor, evaluate, and report on the effectiveness of media campaigns and project management. Use performance metrics to inform future strategies.
- Executive Communication: Produce executive-ready reports and presentations. Collaborate with peers in a heavily matrixed organization and advise senior leadership on media relations and PR matters. Lead workshops to educate the strategic communications team about media monitoring trends and expectations. Prepare leadership for interviews and develop remarks for media events. Provide on-site media assistance at events and appearances.
- Media and PR Planning: Manage strategic media relations efforts for partner departments. Develop and execute strategic PR plans to support fundraising efforts. Conduct proactive media outreach to build relationships, secure coverage, and recruit for media visits. Collaborate with internal and external video crews for media-related needs.
- Seasoned Writer and Editor: Create press materials, including releases, alerts, media lists, press kits, backgrounders, and campaign media reports. Recommend and execute the best distribution strategy as part of the overall PR plan.
- Agency Management: Act as a liaison with external PR firms engaged by ALSAC fundraising partners. Collaborate on campaign strategy and provide necessary materials for PR plan execution. Review PR plans, materials, and reports created by such firms.
- Teamwork: Work effectively, assertively, collaboratively, and professionally in a team environment. Negotiate priorities and timelines diplomatically and maintain professional composure under tight deadlines and pressure. Build and maintain positive relationships with all departments enterprise wide.
- Crisis Management: Manage and navigate crisis communications effectively in partnership with internal Brand and Reputation teams.
Qualifications:
- Robust history of building and maintaining media contacts.
- Highly organized, dynamic, and able to advance projects independently without follow-ups or micromanagement.
- Extensive experience building complex, multi-channel media opportunities and securing unprecedented results.
- Action-oriented with a focus on results.
- Proven leadership experience.
- Highly effective communicator and natural analyzer of information.
- Team player with a collaborative mindset.
- Bilingual skills are a plus.
Requirements:
- Thorough knowledge of journalism, communications, public relations, and media relations.
- Ability to speak and write clearly and concisely for internal and external relations.
- Proficiency in English spelling, AP Style guide grammar, and usage.
- Strong news writing and editing skills.
- Excellent organizational and project management skills.
- Effective communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs.
- Photographic knowledge, including how to take and recognize powerful photos.
- Success in building relationships with media, influencers, and content creators, and securing media coverage.
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field.
- At least 10-15 years of relevant experience in journalism, public relations, media relations, and/or marketing communications, with agency experience preferred.
