Job Title: Librarian
Reports to: Library Director
Classification: General Employee
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

SUMMARY:

This position provides professional library services to patrons of all ages, but will focus on adults. The position requires strong customer service skills and the ability to multi-task, prioritize, and manage time effectively. This position is under the supervision of the Library Director.

This position requires a Master's Degree from an American Library Association accredited Library School, or for the candidate to be within 9 credits of obtaining the degree. We will be unable to consider applicants not meeting this requirement.

SHIFT/HOURS:

THIS POSITION IS FOR 28 HOURS PER WEEK AND WILL INCLUDE:
Tuesdays 11-5
Wednesdays 8:30-2:30
Thursdays 10:30-7
Fridays 8:30-5
Saturdays, on a rotation, working every third Saturday (in lieu of one of the weekdays on those weeks).

Work Schedule is subject to the operational needs of the library.
Duties/Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provides reference and reader's advisory services to library patrons of all ages at the adult and children's service desks using print and electronic resources.
  • Assists patrons in using library resources: books, computers and peripheral equipment, online catalogs, databases, the Internet and software.
  • Provides backup assistance to library assistants and clerks for all circulation functions at the main service desk.
  • Directs, assists and provides training for other employees and volunteers.
  • Organizes, prepares and presents programs and outreach events which promote life-long independent learning and literacy in the community.
  • Prepares informational and promotional materials about library events and resources including press releases, flyers, displays, bulletin boards, resource guides, calendars, and newsletters in print and electronic format.
  • Selects materials for purchase in assigned areas using reviewed sources to ensure a balanced collection that serves the popular interests and educational needs of the community.
  • Maintains assigned areas of the collection including the cataloging of new items and the systematic evaluation of current collections.
  • Maintains and develops content for the library's website, social media pages, and other library electronic platforms when assigned.
  • Prepares programming statistics as requested by library administration.
  • Serves as librarian-in-charge when assigned.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of trends in library services by reading professional journals and participating in continuing education opportunities.
  • Participates in staff meetings when required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Maintains prompt, predictable, and regular physical attendance.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:
  • Master's Degree from an American Library Association accredited library school (or within 9 credits of completion). Degree must be obtained within 6 months of hire.
  • One (1) year experience in library operations required with public library experience preferred.
  • Possession of a valid Wisconsin motor vehicle operator's license and willingness to use own transportation in the course of performing required duties.

Knowledge, skills and abilities:
  • Advanced knowledge of current library principles, procedures, technology, goals and philosophy of service.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to a changing technological and content/information distribution landscape.
  • Ability to gather statistics, analyze information and prepare reports.
  • Ability to use and provide support for current digital devices and software including Microsoft Office products, the Internet, email, and new technology as introduced and/or adopted.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, co-workers, and the public.
  • Ability to deal with the public with tact and discretion.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to perform tasks with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to set priorities and manage time to complete tasks.
  • Ability to provide truthful and accurate written and verbal communications.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of library patron information.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Networked personal computer, related software and peripherals; integrated library system, mobile devices; calculator; cash register; multi-line telephone; copy machine; fax machine; new technology as introduced and/or adopted.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, bend, lift, twist, talk, and hear (normal range in office environment, corrected or uncorrected); use hands to finger, handle, grasp; reach with hands and arms; lift and carry up to 50 pounds; and push or pull up to 200 pounds. The employee must occasionally sit, crouch, and crawl, kneel, and climb.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
