This job class is the entry and training level classification in the Library.

JOB SUMMARY:
To provide a variety of general clerical assistance in support of circulation, reference, classification, and record keeping activities in a public library; to receive and assist patrons in the use of library resources and services. This job class is the entry and training level classification in the Library.
Examples of Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Receives patrons, provides basic assistance in the use of library facilities and resources
- Responds to public inquires; provides information within scope of knowledge and refers to employee of higher classification if required.
- Checks outs, discharges, and renews all library materials.
- Issues library cards; reviews library policies and procedures with patrons.
- Operates computers; inputs and retrieves data.
- Demonstrates use of equipment to patrons; microfilm/fiche reader, printers, online catalog, computers, copiers, etc.
- Sorts and shelves returning materials.
- Answers phones and routes messages.
- Calculates and collects funds for overdue and damaged materials.
- Prepares routine reports; types and performs other clerical and technical duties in support of library activities and operations as assigned.
- In addition, when assigned to Technical Services: Unpacks shipments of Library materials and prepares them for invoicing, processes new materials for circulation; mends damaged library materials.
- In addition, when assigned to Public Services: Assists in the planning and preparation of programs and materials for the youth services department. Assists patrons in accessing online resources and basic computer services in the computer lab as needed.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities is:
- One year of customer service work experience; preferably including experience in a library.
- The ability to speak English and Spanish
LICENSE & CERTIFICATION:
