Under the supervision of the Page Supervisors, shelves all library materials, maintains the collection in order on the shelves, and pulls items to fill customer requests. Performs a variety of tasks related to circulation and shelving of library materials and provides service in the Library’s café. Under the direction of the Café Operator, prepares and serves drinks and food.


Part-time (14-19 hours per week). Schedule includes days, evenings, and weekends.

A SHELVING TEST IS REQUIRED AND WILL BE GIVEN AT THE TIME OF INTERVIEW.

Responsibilities:

  • Sorts and shelves library materials following established priorities
  • Straightens library materials on shelves
  • Merchandises books and other library materials to enhance their appeal and promote their use by browsers
  • Maintains materials in correct alphabetical and Dewey order
  • Assists customers by telephone
  • Moves materials within the building
  • Pulls requested items from shelves
  • Discards newspapers monthly according to established procedures
  • Maintains a clean and organized workspace
  • Prepares and serves drinks and food in accordance with health code and café standards
  • Operates a cash register
  • Maintains café spaces according to food handler requirements
  • Ability to obtain and retain appropriate state food handler certification
  • Assists with training of staff and volunteers
  • Participates in departmental and library-wide training and activities, including technology and safety training
  • Provides excellent internal and external customer service
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Ability to work with library customers and staff in a friendly and efficient manner
  • Ability to alphabetize and learn the Dewey classification arrangement
  • Ability to learn and use the integrated library system
  • Ability to maintain reliable attendance and regular work schedule
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions and work independently
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others as a team
  • Positive attitude and strong work ethic
  • Ability to issue guidance and ensure compliance with the library’s rules of conduct and policies
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing situations and to vary work schedule
  • Good vision and hearing to effectively engage with customers
  • Manual dexterity to operate computer and phone equipment
  • Familiarity with workplace productivity software, including skills in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to use a cash register and accurately manage sales transactions
  • Physical ability to regularly lift library materials weighing approximately 40 pounds and push fully loaded carts, as well as bend and stretch to reach high and low shelves
  • Satisfactory pre-employment background check

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Customer Service experience preferred
  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age
