Job Description
You have excellent video production skills and are organized, data driven, creative, and have strong instincts around videos that engage, share, and offer service in a crowded, online video landscape. You will have 6+ years of experience in video journalism and expertise across all stages of video production. You will manage a team of producers and freelancers and will guide the development of new video and series concepts for NYT Cooking.
Responsibilities:
- Lead creative development of all video formats with an emphasis on reporting, storytelling, and entertainment related to cooking and food.
- Manage a team of video journalists and the development of original videos for NYT Cooking.
- Set expectations for team members about their role and goals and help build career development plans for individual reports.
- Make staffing recommendations and decisions to build a diverse and talented team.
- Manage production calendars and coordinate with producers, coordinators, freelancers, and editors to assure deadlines are met.
- Optimize video workflow processes to bring efficiency, visibility, and clarity throughout the production process. Create resources to support all productions and workflows.
- Oversee the video approval process and provide constructive feedback.
- Balance managing and leading productions simultaneously that develop and expand a visual identity, voice, and community.
- Oversee production with the goal of attracting, engaging, and growing both on and off-platform audiences.
- Advise on budget and equipment needs.
- Coordinate and strategize with social editors to improve video assets and edits for publishing across multiple platforms.
- Strategize with writers, editors, food stylists, prop stylists, chefs, and others to create videos at a level consistent with the Times standards for recipe presentation, cooking technique, and accuracy.
- May shoot and edit video.
- This position reports to Executive Video Producer, NYT Cooking.
Basic Qualifications:
- 6+ years of relevant experience in video journalism: producing, directing, shooting, scripting, and editing videos for an online audience.
- Expertise in camera, lighting, and other professional video equipment for both in-studio and on-location settings.
- Expertise in video editing.
- Experience working closely with reporters and editors to develop original stories.
- 6+ years of project management skills and the ability to delegate and prioritize assignments.
- People management skills. Experience managing and training more junior producers.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A strategic mind with a bend towards testing and iterating to find what resonates with various audiences.
- Flexibility and embrace of change; ability to tweak and evolve production workflow around developing platforms and formats.
- Willingness to pitch in when needed to accomplish goals of a small team and learn new skills.
- A passion for cooking and the mission of The New York Times.
The annual base pay salary for this role is between $130,000.00 and $140,000.00.
