Qualifications:
- Education: A high school education is required. Advanced training is preferred.
- Certification: None is required, but certification through training and professional associations is desirable.
- Experience: None is required, but office experience and knowledge of library science is preferred.
- Skills and Knowledge: Human relations, clerical practices, machine operation, Microsoft Works and data processing required.
- Other: Ability to maintain a positive relationship with pupils, staff, parents, and the community.
Essential Functions:
- Student Assistance
- Helping students locate information.
- Work with students regarding their overdue materials.
- Copy reference material for reports.
- Library supervision.
- Circulation of materials.
- Sign students in and out of media center.
- Train student aides and parent volunteers.
- Processing required includes catalog cards, letters, forms, purchase orders.
- Process new books, software and equipment.
- Check in weekly/monthly periodicals.
- Repair damaged books and A-V materials and equipment. Replace bulbs in A-V equipment, maintain copier, and keep an accurate count of number of copies run during the school year.
- Computer skills:
- Word processing, electronic cataloging, computer programs, media newsletters, and lessons.
- Follett Circulation/Catalog Program: this includes student information, needed bibliographies (Category Reports) for special projects, and issue an overdue list once a week.
- Create bibliographies of cataloged AV software and distribute to teachers.
- Maintain inventory of equipment, repairs and teacher check-out of equipment.
- Maintain monthly/yearly circulation's statistics.
- Maintain computer reading programs.
- Have knowledge of Daily Bulletin Board if Data Entry Secretary is absent.
- Generate computer lists/reports as needed.
- Media Retrieval: Assist teachers when needed with programming media events. At the end of the school day, load and unload tapes, laser discs in retrieval racks. Print schedule of daily events.
- Input data into Synergy Program.
- Maintain retrieval remotes and troubleshooting retrieval problems.
- Assist Media Specialist with daily news broadcast.
- Pull books and related materials (from computer category reports) for classes using Media Center.
- Assist with Book Fair, displays in Media Center, issue receipts for lost books, order library supplies.
- Verify that all materials have been returned before a student withdraws. Issue a list of all materials not returned to School Secretary and Guidance Office.
- Before school starts in fall, check in materials, magazines, and new equipment received during summer and have equipment ready for teacher check-out when school begins. Assist Media Specialist "finalize" inventory.
- Periodically send students bills for overdue materials. Before school is out send bills to student's parents for materials not returned.
- After school is out, assist Media Specialist with a complete inventory of Media Center. Clean and check equipment for operation. Keep an accurate record of equipment sent out for repair. Check in teacher materials and inventory equipment. Assist with finalizing inventory and issue circulation, missing items, and inventory reports.
- Keep up-to-date backups of Synergy and Follett Circulation Systems.
- Maintain a list of student bar code numbers. Assign new students a number and enter information in the computer. Issue a student list of their bar code and room numbers.
- Keep an accurate account of all bar code numbers used for books, AV materials, and equipment. Assign bar code numbers to purchase orders when ordering new materials.
- Keep a copy of purchase orders for checking new material in.
- Process and enter all new material in the computer. Assist Media Specialist with cataloging. Knowledge of a "Full Marc Record" is necessary.
- Assist teachers in use of new technology.
- Be an example of exemplary adult behavior for students.
- Project a genuine care and concern for all students.
- Participate in professional development, as assigned.
- Other duties as assigned by the Principal and Media Specialist.
