Why We're Hiring Complex is looking for a Weekend News Editor to work with our News team in covering a variety of breaking news stories for Complex.com that align with the brand and audience. Reporting directly to the News Director, the Weekend News Editor will assign and edit a team of news freelancers to consistently execute news coverage at an exceptional level. The ideal candidate will lead the news operation during the weekends and use their journalistic experience and knowledge of the Complex audience to source and select content to promote, with an emphasis on quality, accuracy, and context. What You Will Do Work closely with News Director to increase quality, efficiency, and performance of news coverage on complex.com Lead news coverage on the weekends and ensure big stories are being published in a timely manner Assist in managing/editing a team of 15+ news freelancers Monitor and promptly respond to news relevant to Complex's audience Edit written content for factual, grammatical, and structural accuracy Ensure stories you're editing have the best elements to provide context to a reader as a story is developing Collaborate with social media team to maximize the reach of news coverage Write news stories when necessary Reach out to representatives across various industries to advance news coverage and gather comments/statements while building a rapport that is beneficial to the news team and the company at large Plan coverage in advance for major moments and events that align with our brand Coordinate weekend schedule for writers and editors Monitor editorial traffic to ensure that goals are met Who You Are 5+ years of editorial experience 4+ years working in a newsroom environment with demonstrated experience assigning, writing, and editing news stories Understand Complex's blend of internet, music, pop culture, and entertainment Exemplary written and communication skills A ceaseless, always-on approach to tracking down the best news stories for coverage Trustworthy news judgment and understanding of the right angles for the right stories Strong understanding of SEO best practices and experience working in a CMS Ability to edit efficiently while under deadline pressure Self-starter who can deliver with little to no supervision Be able to immediately respond to breaking news and get error-free articles published quickly Working hours from 5pm ET-1pm ET Fridays, 9pm ET-5pm ET Saturdays, 12pm ET-8pm ET Sundays, and 12pm ET-8pm ET on Mondays and Tuesdays Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends, and to sign-on on after hours to write and publish news stories when necessary What We Offer Best in class health, dental, and vision insurance Healthcare FSA Dependent Care FSA Commuter Benefits FSA Short-term/long-term disability and life insurance Paid Parental leave 401k with 4% match Pet Insurance Legal and Identity Theft Plans Vacation time and sick days $70,000 - $80,000 a year The Pay Range, which consists of salary and commission, for this position is listed.
