MoMA is currently accepting applications for an Associate Creative Director. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of The Museum of Modern Art’s dynamic Retail team and is the key design team lead and manager for MoMA Design Store’s creative. Reporting to the Director of Marketing, Retail with a dotted line to the Museum’s Creative Director, the Associate Creative Director for MoMA Design Store supervises and develops projects across every Retail touchpoint, including brand identity, catalog, marketing campaigns, website creative, signage, imagery, video, presentations, and more.

The candidate demonstrates a high level of creative talent, conceptual development with excellent design and typography skills, playing a prominent role in creating a cohesive and effective brand ecosystem. They lead their team to produce work that can inspire and delight our customers, bringing to life the rich stories behind our brand and the products we sell.

Responsibilities

  • Leads creative vision, strategy and team to strengthen consumer experience, translate strategic goals and ensure cohesive brand guidelines and messaging across all channels (e.g. marketing, store signage and windows, e-commerce, photography, licensing, catalog, product development, and packaging).
  • Develops and executes creative concepts for upcoming seasons and key campaigns enhancing and diversifying MoMA’s product offering through new design opportunities.
  • Authors visual strategy for e-commerce, stores, and media that communicate MoMA Design Store’s key value propositions to consumers.
  • Manages the ongoing development of the Design Store’s visual identity system, ensuring our brand is felt across all major audience touchpoints. Works closely with MoMA’s Creative Director to ensure all Retail creative deliverables are fully in-line with MoMA’s overall brand.
  • Encourages the creative team to drive innovation in design thinking — stretching our visual identity system to ensure freshness in our design, store visuals, and communications. Initiates brainstorming sessions with design team and partner teams and manages the creative process to ensure successful and efficient execution of design.
  • Presents preliminary designs, comprehensives, and complete layouts for review.
  • Manages feedback and approval for projects such as seasonal campaigns, product launches, licensed partnerships, pop-ups, catalog, store visuals, product development and more.
  • Manages and resources all internal and external creative resources, agencies, and freelancers from creative briefing through final production.
  • Manages resource planning, budget, timelines, and the day-to-day operations of the creative team.
  • Collaborates with partners on the e-commerce, marketing, merchandising, and store teams to ensure the Design Store’s visual identity is successfully applied across all touchpoints in service of our business goals.
  • Manages and mentors a team of individual contributors; makes hiring recommendations or decisions for staff vacancies and internships; supervises assigned staff on a daily basis, providing relevant training, feedback, guidance, professional development, etc.
  • Works closely with the team to manage and triage scope, timeline, and process for all projects.
  • Performs any other duties reasonably related to the functions described above.

Requirements

  • BFA or MFA in graphic design and seven to ten years design and production experience, including five years as a senior designer or art director, or equivalent.
  • Must be a creative and wide-ranging thinker who can frame a project strategically for any executive stakeholder and bring it to the highest degree of finish and execution.
  • Excellent design and conceptual ability with thorough knowledge of e-commerce, marketing channels, digital media, store visuals, catalog, and print and digital production.
  • Excellent organizational and multitasking skills in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Strong managerial expertise, and well-developed interpersonal leadership skills, with the ability to oversee projects, people, budgets, and timelines.
  • Skilled in strategic planning and creating and delivering verbal and visual presentations.
  • Ability to incorporate client feedback into the creative process.
  • Superb communication skills with well-developed interpersonal leadership skills.
  • Proactive problem solving proficiency.
  • Thorough knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (CS8) including AfterEffects.
  • Intermediate digital fluency and fluency with G Suite for day-to-day and advanced project management tasks.

Supervises:

Digital Design Manager, Store Visual Design Manager, Photographer, Stylist and Production Manager, and Retoucher.

Reports to:

Director, Retail Marketing with a dotted line to MoMA’s Creative Director.

Salary Range:

Minimum of $125,000 to a maximum of $149,000 per annum.
