Background:

Asia and the Pacific

UN Women's Regional Asia and the Pacific Regional Office in Bangkok supports and carries out work on (i) expanding women's leadership and participation; (ii) enhancing women's economic empowerment; and (iii) ending violence against women. In addition to the above, UN Women also actively participates and contributes to various UN inter-agency processes and collaborates with UN organizations around specific programme areas.

External Relations Unit (ERU)

This position is based within the External Relations Unit for the UN Women Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP). At the regional office, the External Relations Unit oversees building partnerships with private sector entities as well as bilateral partners, non-profit organizations, and the media. The External Relations Unit also provides strategic advice and technical support to both the regional office and country offices in Advocacy and Communications in Asia and the Pacific. Regional Communications Specialist will be the consultant’s supervisor.

In this context, UN Women Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific seeks to hire consultants both national and international as Consultant – Graphic Designer (Retainer). The successful candidates will be offered a retainer type of contract for a minimum of three-year period.

Description of Responsibilities / Scope of Work

The consultant will work with UN Women Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP), including the Regional Programme staff. The consultant will work closely with UN Women to perform the following tasks:

  1. Conceptualize design and layout of high-quality innovative, creative and attention-grabbing materials (print and online), for web-based communications as infographics, illustrations, reports, web and social media-based campaigns, advocacy initiatives, promotional and training materials, animations, and GIFs as assigned by Programme Managers;
  2. The conceptual design once finalized should be modified, adapted and transformed to other means and mediums easily such as banner (various canvas sizes), promotional material productions, static graphics to animation or vice versa;
  3. The final design should be easy to localize into languages in Asia-Pacific (multiple languages ready package);
  4. Follow UN Women Branding Guidelines and Identity Standards;
  5. Liaise with the printing/production facilities and provide them with all relevant production-related information;
  6. Conduct quality control to ensure accurate and high-quality work;
  7. Modify, revise and edit materials as required, in consultation with Programme Managers, Production Specialist and Web Manager of UN Women Headquarters;
  8. If any third-party packages or copyrighted materials are being used in the design package, the proof of purchase, license certificate, and/or license agreement should be presented and agreed upon by UN Women before finalizing the design package.

Principle

  1. Advocacy messages should be positive and empowering and reflect the diversity of the Asia-Pacific region in terms of ethnicity, age, gender, etc.;
  2. Materials designed or design package in such a way that they can be updated and adjusted for future use (all colours, fonts (in TTF or OTF), inserted images, animations or links or any other used resource should be included in the design package; fonts should not be converted to outlines in order to follow further edits and adaptations in the future);
  3. Ensuring the design of the materials is consistent with UN Women communications guidelines;
  4. UN Women has non-exclusive world rights in perpetuity of all designed submissions and products.

Consultant’s Workplace and Official Travel

The time required for the consultancy is estimated at 420 working days within the period indicated. The consultant will be engaged under a retainer contract, which facilitates direct engagement of the consultant depending on need and availability within the contract period for a pre-agreed fee.

Functional Competencies:

•Proficiency in Adobe Suite, Corel Draw, and other graphic design software.
•Expertise in digital and print formats, including social media content.
•Familiarity with gender-responsive communication materials.

Required Qualifications

Education and Certification:

•Master’s degree or equivalent in design or layout, digital communications, educational technology, journalism, public relations, or related fields.
•A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience:

•Minimum of two years professional experience in the field of design, illustration or layout work;
•Experience in graphics animation, character animation is an advantage;
•Experience in creative skills and advanced command over a range of graphic design software, can be programmes such as Adobe CC, CorelDraw, Canva etc. Adobe Suit is preferable;
•Experience in printing and production matters and knowledge of different formats for printing, understanding of the digital space and designing for a digital and social media environment is preferable;
•Previous working experience in Asia and the Pacific, knowledge of the UN System, and/or experience designing gender-equality advocacy materials an advantage;

Languages:

•Fluency in English is required.
