Part Time Library Assistant - Flemington Free Public Library

Job Responsibilities: Assists with day-to-day library operations and programming.

Qualifications: Enrolled in high school and in the process of completing coursework which would support library operations. High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Primary Duties:

  • Covers the front desk, answers phones, checks materials in and out and registers new patrons with the appropriate library cards. Empties the book drop and shelves returned books.
  • Provides assistance with public access computing. Demonstrates familiarity with Microsoft Word, email, and printing functions.
  • Gains familiarity with the library’s downloadable resources and assists patrons with their devices when needed.
  • Receives payments, including making change for copies, accepting payment for lost books and for sale of discarded books. Records payments in log.
  • Handles questions from patrons. Records and submits all complaints and suggestions to the Library Director.
  • Shelves returned books daily and leaves the library in an orderly fashion.
  • Ensures that lights are off, all areas cleared of patrons, all doors locked and alarmed at the end of the day. At the end of each shift, work areas must be left neat and tidy.
  • Cross-trains with other staff to learn key skills in other roles.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the Library Director.

  • Demonstrates ability to operate standard office equipment, such as personal computers, copiers and fax machines.
  • Demonstrates ability to exercise independent judgment, reliability, and maintain confidential integrity as required.
  • Possesses strong communication and public relations skills.
  • Demonstrates ability to maintain a close working relationship with library employees.
  • Flexible, hardworking and detail oriented.
  • Familiar with many aspects of public service operations including circulation and basic reference services and technology.
  • Demonstrates ability to handle a frequently fast-paced position with numerous interruptions.
