ABOUT THE POSITION The City of Goleta invites applications for the position of Library Department Aide on the Goleta Valley Library Bookvan. The Library Department Aide will support the Library Assistant with providing Bookvan services to the community of Isla Vista. Duties include unloading Bookvan equipment, carrying bags of books and materials in and out of the Bookvan, setting up tables and carts of materials to be checked out, creating library cards for new users, checking out materials using the computer system, and assisting mobile library users.
The ideal candidate will have a passion for outreach, customer service, and bringing public library materials and services to various locations in the community. Each Bookvan team consists of two staff members who work together to transport library materials to Isla Vista.
This position may be required to fill in as a Bookvan driver on an as-needed basis; accordingly, candidates may be required to have a valid Class "C" California driver's license with a satisfactory driving record and provide current vehicle insurance coverage upon hire. Bilingual English-Spanish is desired, but not required. The Bookvan operates Monday through Friday with stops throughout the Isla Vista area. The specialty van holds approximately 500 books and is powered with Wi-Fi and a solar battery. The Bookvan provides library services to the wider Isla Vista community with the delivery of books, audiovisual materials, Library of Things items, technology, craft kits for kids, Honor System books, free books, and more. The expected schedule for this position is 15 hours per week, over the following days and times: Mondays 11:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., Tuesdays 12:30 - 5:30 p.m., and Wednesdays 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. FROM THE CLASS SPECIFICATION Under supervision, performs a variety of office support and clerical duties and activities of a general and specialized nature for an assigned department or division; relieves department staff of routine administrative detail; provides a variety of information to other agencies, City staff, and the general public; and maintains a variety of files and records. Work is usually supervised while in progress and/or fits an established structure or pattern. This is a non-benefited, at-will classification. Persons appointed to positions in this classification will be classified as temporary, at-will employees, and will not gain property rights or have an expectation of continued employment. Incumbents will work an average of 15 hours per week and will work no more than 999 hours per Fiscal Year. This position will likely include evening and weekend shifts.

Learn, interpret, and apply general administrative and departmental policies and procedures. Perform a variety of support tasks and other duties and activities of a general and specialized nature for an assigned department or division. Respond to requests and inquiries from coworkers, vendors, and the general public. Operate and use modern office equipment including a computer and various software packages. Conduct assignments with discretion; exercise good judgment and maintain confidentiality of critical and sensitive information, records, and reports. Demonstrate an awareness and appreciation of the cultural diversity of the community. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Education/Training Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. Experience: One year (full-time equivalent) of related experience involving departmental support and/or customer service.
