Job Description

An employee in this class performs technical and skilled administrative support work assisting patrons at the library's main facility. Work includes providing customer service at the circulation desk, assisting patrons in locating library materials and in the use of library resources, checking books or other media in and out, issuing library cards, collecting fines, preparing books for carts, preparing library displays, answering some reference questions, and assisting patrons in the use of library equipment including public computers and printers. Work involves significant public contact, requiring employees to be tactful and courteous. Employees may specialize in work in one area, but must be able to answer questions about full library services. Some employees also have specialized assignments within their work area of the library such as putting up serials and publications, ordering forms, and pulling outdated materials. Part-time, Monday-Thursday, 3:45pm-7:15pm. Starting hourly rate $17.21 per hour. Examples of Job Duties

Provides customer service at the circulation desk; responds to routine information requests; answers questions regarding library programs and services; explains library policies to new and current patrons, including interlibrary loan, hours, programs, circulation policies; answers telephone, routes calls, and takes messages. Checks books, DVD's and library materials in and out; places items on reserve; provides general assistance to patrons in reader's advisory, general reference and on location of various library materials. Computes and collects overdue fines and fees for lost or damaged books; collects cash and makes change, processes check and credit card payments; maintains and balances cash drawer; prepares daily deposits. Instructs and assists patrons with the internet, computer, copier, and printer; locates information and materials using the computer. Registers patrons for library cards; issues new and replacement library cards. Assists in planning and presenting educational library programs. Creates, prepares, and maintains visual library displays and bulletin boards to promote literacy and programs; maintains the overall appearance of the library; assists in preparing marketing materials, flyers, and seasonal decorations. Organizes books and materials for return to shelves; examines condition and mends damaged books and library materials; shelves books and organizes materials into proper sequence. Reads shelves for accuracy; straightens books and materials on shelves. Assists in keeping circulation desk area and other library areas neat and orderly. May have special assignments such as sorting book donations and planning special library events.

Additional Job Duties Performs related tasks as required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities General knowledge of circulation and cataloging programs of the library's computer system, and various types of informational materials in the library. General knowledge of books, reference materials, periodicals, audio-visual and other materials available for acquisition. Working knowledge of library procedures, methods, materials and practices. Working knowledge of the library's filing system and various types of informational materials in the main or branch facilities. Working knowledge of computers, printers, and other equipment in the library and ability to use them in the performance of duties. Working knowledge of the circulation, reader's advisory, and basic library procedures. Skill in data entry into a computer and operating general office equipment. Ability to instruct patrons in the use of various office equipment, computers, and library reference materials. Ability to follow established procedures and to use standard library methods and principles in circulation and reference services. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, supervisors, patrons, and the general public. Ability to perform a variety of tasks with frequent interruptions. Ability to deal tactfully and courteously in frequent contact with library patrons of various ages and the general public

Qualifications Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma and experience providing services to the public including some general office, clerical, or accounting work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A part-time employee working less than 1000 hours per year. No additional benefits.

A part-time employee working more than 1000 hours but less than 1560 hours will automatically participate in the North Carolina Local Government Retirement System.
