PURPOSE OF POSITION:
The Librarian will manage the library, create programs for children, adults, visitors, and residents that are designed
to improve literacy and build community. The Librarian will seek and create opportunities for residents and visitors
of different backgrounds to build community through a variety of means.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Foster a welcoming and respectful environment for all patrons.
- Maintain regular library hours.
- Help establish and follow library usage rules, expectations, and policies.
- Maintain a clean and orderly library facility and grounds, and notify the City Manager of any problems or
issues. - Meet with Library Advisory Board and participate in professional development opportunities.
- Register new patrons, issue library cards, and assist patrons with access to online databases.
- Use the library’s online systems to check materials in and out.
- Learn independently about library collection development, programming, trends, and other standard
characteristics of what makes up good libraries. - Communicate regularly with the City Manager and Library Advisory Board about budget actions, library
expenditures, patron fines, and grant funding opportunities. - Recruit Library Aides, Library Advisory Board members, and community volunteers to offer and maintain
library programs. - Be proficient with computers, printers, scanners, security monitoring, and other office equipment.
- Follow all grant requirements.
- Complete reports for Library grantors and monthly reports for the City Council.
- Refrain from conducting personal business during Library hours.
- Work with limited supervision.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma, GED or higher preferred and one (1) year work experience in a customer service setting or
an equivalent combination of education and experience to sufficiently demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and
ability to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.

Knowledge of:
- Popular books, movies, music, and media, as well as current technology trends.
- Internet browsers, online databases, search engines, word processing, email, and both Macintosh and
Windows operating systems. - Common office equipment like computers, printers, scanners, and barcode scanners.
- Connect with people from different backgrounds and assist library patrons.
- Learn new technologies, equipment, and procedures quickly.
- Explain computer tasks to beginners.
- Be friendly, patient, and calm, even in busy or stressful situations.
- Build positive relationships with customers, staff, and the public.
- Use good judgment to solve problems.
- Read and understand manuals, policies, social media, and other written materials.
- Perform basic math using a calculator or cash register.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to have sufficient physical ability and mobility to
work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to operate office equipment requiring
repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; and to verbally
communicate to exchange information.
The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 30 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Most work performed will be in an office environment with out-of-office duties required only for special events.
Non-standard work hours such as evenings, weekends, and holidays may be required. Frequent opportunity and
requirements to interact with other City employees and the public. The work location for this position will be at
the Adak Public Library on Adak Island.
