Job Description
The purpose of this position is to spread the message of the restored Church of Jesus Christ around the world through music. This is accomplished in part through the transcreation of music products in 100+ languages. These products are delivered via web, print, mobile, and other delivery channels.

The Sacred Materials Translation Supervisor 1 (Music) is part of the Publishing Services Department (PSD) of the Church, housed specifically in the Scripture and Music Production Division on the music translation team. This role supervises the new Hymns–For Home and Church product in 2-4 languages from initiation to publication, working under the direction of the Music Translation and Publishing Manager and a Music Translation Supervisor Team Lead. In partnership with Area language office personnel, the supervisor 1) ensures implementation of proper processes and adherence to project timelines, 2) selects, trains and coaches transcreators in various parts of the world, 3) analyzes the linguistic and musical quality of transcreations, and 4) facilitates translation team dynamics and unity.

The ideal supervisor is self-motivated, detail-oriented, appreciates diverse cultures, and enjoys teaching and communicating with different peoples. They must have an affinity for languages, poetry, and music. They should be comfortable traveling internationally and working during non-standard business hours to facilitate work with teams in other time zones.

This is a fully-benefited, time-bound role with an expected end date of July 1st, 2029. This role can be fully remote. The ideal candidate for this role would be available to begin in a full-time capacity on or before May 5th, 2025. The starting salary range is between 70K-80K, depending on experience.

Responsibilities

  • 20% – Oversee implementation of proper processes and ensure progress of music transcreation work for assigned languages and projects, including partnering with Area language office personnel, organizing work, and providing direction to ensure timely completion of jobs.
  • 30% – Engage with external and internal transcreation providers to recruit, onboard, train, and manage relationships and performance. Train individuals to become skilled transcreation providers who can transcreate sacred music.
  • 35% – Evaluate the quality of transcreations and adherence to Church music transcreation guidelines through thorough linguistic quality analysis.
  • 10% – Research language usage and conventions, with an emphasis on poetry and music transcreation. Establish linguistic standards and style guides for use by music transcreation teams. Act as a linguistic or cultural consultant for each assigned language.
  • 5% – Seek broad feedback from native speakers to certify language acceptability.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor's degree in linguistics or related field.

Professional Experience

  • At least 4 years of experience in translation, linguistics, or a related field, including supervising the work of others, preferably translation teams.

Language Skills

  • Mastery of spoken and written English (native level) and working knowledge of at least two other languages, including vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and syntax. Ability to gain working knowledge of additional languages, as needed.
  • Capability to translate well in at least one language pair.
  • Knowledge of linguistic theory. Understanding of and ability to identify literary figures and devices.
  • Sound knowledge of countries, history, culture, current events, customs, and values associated with languages spoken.

Music Skills

  • Ability to read and understand music notation.

Technical Skills

  • Ability to navigate through translation and business management tools, web interfaces, reading briefs and instructions, including entering data and downloading and uploading files.
  • Ability to provide basic technical support to translation and business management systems users.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with operating systems and Microsoft Office.

Other

  • Sound understanding of Church doctrine, policies, and ecclesiastical organization. Sound understanding and experience with the sacred music of the Church.
  • Proven skills in public speaking, interpersonal communication, team leadership, coaching, time management, project management, problem-solving, and the ability to work under pressure.
  • Ability to exemplify a compassionate leadership style.
  • Ability to travel internationally several times per year.
