Responsibilities:
- Teach skills in music appreciation, harmony, and explorations in music, and when applicable, in instrumental music (band, orchestra, instrumental ensemble) and choral music (chorus, choir, choral ensemble). Utilize course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
- Instruct students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school system.
- Plan a balanced music program and organize daily class time so that preparation, rehearsal, and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.
- Attempt to integrate music and related activities to specific academic disciplines.
- Provide individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
- Utilize repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of students.
- Control the storage and use of school-owned property; make minor adjustments and request repairs to instruments as required.
- Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment during practice, group rehearsals, and music performances.
- Evaluate each student's musical growth and performance, assessing each individual's contributions to the performance of the group.
- Plan, rehearse, and direct students in musical programs for school, school system, and community.
- Select and requisition books, musical instruments, and instructional aids, and maintain required inventory records.
- Communicate with parents and school counselors on student progress.
- Identify students' needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
- Cooperate with the school administration in providing musical programs for school productions, graduation ceremonies, and civic functions.
- Supervise students in out-of-classroom activities as assigned.
- Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs.
- Participate in faculty committees and sponsorship of student activities.
- Maintain professional competence through inservice education activities provided by the system and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.
- Maintain a correct record of student attendance that can be audited and make daily reports of students absent each period (when appropriate).
- Perform other work-related duties as assigned.
Additional Requirements:
To ensure the safety and welfare of students and staff, the district shall require criminal history background checks and fingerprinting of applicants for teaching positions and any other positions that require proximity to children. Additionally, satisfactory results from a required pre-employment drug screen as well as checks with various state/federal registries are required before an applicant is actually employed by Franklin County Schools.
