JOB DESCRIPTION FOR SCHOOL LIBRARIAN
  • Plans, develops, implements and evaluates the services of the school library program in line with the goals and objectives of the school program.
  • Determines goals and objectives and identifies priorities for the print and non-print services of the school library.
  • Plans for the expenditure of funds allotted to the school library program through the selection, purchasing, and circulation of library/school instructional materials.
  • Provides in-service education for teachers in the use of the school library and its resources and in the selection and utilization of media and makes staff aware of materials and services available.
  • Has responsibility for the formulation of policy related to the school library.
  • Prepares a biennial inventory of print materials and AV equipment (a minimum of every other year).
  • Submits Annual Library Report (Appendix L) at the end of each school year to the Curriculum Supervisor for School Librarians.
  • Participates in instructional planning.
  • Attends team and department meetings to keep abreast of current curriculum.
  • Maintains a learning atmosphere in the school library that encourages students and teachers to use the center and its resources.
  • Maintains a current evaluation of the school library program.
  • Advocates for literacy to the community.
  • Provides instruction in the use of the library and its resources to all students.
  • Performs additional professional duties as assigned by the school principal.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Valid certification to meet State requirements with specific endorsement in the area in which assigned.

Applicant who has had teaching experience must have an acceptable rating for such teaching

Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from four-year accredited College or university

Considered Highly Qualified, possess an active Virginia Teaching License with appropriate endorsement in the area(s) for which they are teaching.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Demonstrates command of Standard English, both spoken and written

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals. Ability to write reports. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of teachers, parents, students, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
