Hennepin County District Court is pleased to offer an excellent opportunity for a candidate seeking practical, professional work experience in a government organization. The selected candidate will be expected to learn innerworkings of divisional processes, placing emphasis on projects and daily tasks that directly support the Court Reporter Unit (CRU) operations and will be working close with the division's scheduling, training, and technical teams.

The CRU is unique in the State of Minnesota in that we are a centralized office that captures the official court record for the Fourth Judicial District Court utilizing both stenographic and digital court reporters. The CRU also processes requests for transcripts and is responsible for managing and maintaining the courtroom audio systems. In addition, the CRU provides training to both internal and external stakeholders to ensure the integrity of the record.

This position is part of a cohort of internship positions with District Court for the summer, and will participate in professional development trainings, as well as opportunities to learn about the work of the courts and Court Reporter Unit's role in supporting the court's mission, vision, and values.

The position is classified as an Intern, with a working title of Court Reporter Unit Intern. It is a temporary position for the summer of 2025, with an expected start date on or near June 3, 2025, and an anticipated end date of August 29, 2025.

Standard business hours for District Court are 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday, with required hours on Fridays from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Candidates interested in part-time positions will also be considered. Scheduled work hours for this position will be finalized between the candidate and supervisor. This position is located at the Hennepin County Government Center, downtown Minneapolis. This position will work primarily onsite, with the occasional option to work remotely, according to business need. A reliable internet connection will be required if working remotely.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
  • Analyze the scheduling process on a macro level and make recommendations on how to enhance the scheduling process for criminal calendars, the usability of court reporters, and the usability for clerks.
  • Update weekly announcements.
  • Create requests on Chambers' behalf on all mandatory calendars.
  • Analyze the storage, inventory and tracking process of equipment and create a tracking system within SharePoint to ensure there is a check out process for items that are shared across the district.
  • Operate the digital recording system for audio and video basics using both primary and backup audio functionalities.
  • Perform courtroom quality checks using audio quality parameters.
  • Process incoming transcript requests.
  • Assist with audio issues.
  • Assist with inventory control.
  • Assist with monthly check on equipment and update SharePoint accordingly.
  • Audit court reporter submissions.
  • Work on the accessibility workgroup.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree or current enrollment with 1 year of completion from an accredited college or university for the upcoming Summer-Fall 2025 and/or Spring 2026 term(s).
  • Be 18 years or age or older by June 3, 2025.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Some knowledge of office practices, procedures, methods, and equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain clerical records.
  • Ability to learn computerized office programs.
  • Ability to learn routine rules of court, state statutes, and court and office policies and procedures of the area assigned.
  • Ability to make routine decisions in accordance with instructions and regulations.
  • Ability to become familiar with facility locations and assignments.
  • Ability to professionally exhibit cultural sensitivity, patience, and understanding in the course of work duties.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to manage workload effectively including planning, organizing, prioritizing, and meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to provide a level of customer service that meets/exceeds customer expectation and satisfaction while complying with court policies and procedures.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience using design software such as Microsoft Publisher, Adobe Photoshop, or similar programs.
  • Experience using electronic document applications, such as Microsoft Office Suite, Google Docs, or Adobe Acrobat, with the ability to learn other, job-related software.
  • Experience with SharePoint or similar programs.
  • Experience with audio technology (microphones, cameras, telephones, and remote systems such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams).

SALARY:
  • The salary rate for this position is $20.38 per hour.
