Job Description: The Library Assistant for Technical Services is a full-time member of the library paraprofessional staff, reporting to the Collections and Technical Services Librarian. This essential position provides support for three vital technical service areas within the library: cataloging, acquisitions, and interlibrary loan. This position leads the cataloging and physical processing of all library materials, the coordination of purchasing books and other materials, and coordinates all aspects of interlibrary loan services, with the support of work-study students. After an initial onboarding period, this position will assume supervisory duties for student workers. The position requires a highly organized and professional individual with excellent technical, oral, and written skills, who can interact proficiently and confidently with library faculty and staff, the University community as a whole, and outside libraries, organizations, and vendors. This person must be familiar with current cataloging standards, the cataloging and circulation modules within an integrated library system (ILS), as well as interlibrary loan systems and procedures.

Responsibilities:

Cataloging and Acquisitions:

  • Performs copy and original cataloging and physical processing of all library materials.
  • Executes all aspects of the purchasing and receiving of library acquisitions, including communicating with faculty and library liaisons, and selecting and working with vendors.
  • Supports the Collections and Technical Services Librarian with book acquisitions, print and online serials management, and other collection and technical services related projects.
  • Assists in invoicing, purchase requisitions, and budget tracking and management.
  • Assists in deaccessioning (weeding) of materials

Interlibrary Loan:

  • Coordinates all interlibrary loan services for the library, including lending and borrowing activities and the supervision of work-study students and graduate assistants.
  • Communicates with the University community as well as outside libraries.

Other Functions

  • Assists librarians with special projects.
  • Attends professional workshops, conferences, and training sessions.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Experience working in a library technical services department/unit, preferably in an academic setting.
  • Trained in original and copy cataloging and working with an integrated library system (Koha preferred).
  • Practical knowledge of acquisitions management, including print and online serials
  • Experience with interlibrary loan procedures and workflows (Tipasa and EZBorrow preferred)
  • General knowledge of other library services (Circulation, Reserves, Reference, Archives)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Apps tools
  • Strong professional communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced work environment with excellent organizational skills
  • Flexibility; able to multitask and prioritize effectively
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently when necessary
  • Knowledge of/interest in working in a teaching and learning environment
  • Ability to communicate professionally with various audiences; familiarity working with university faculty, staff, and students
  • Experience with finances and monitoring departmental budgets beneficial
  • Supervision of student workers and graduate assistants preferred
  • Bachelor's degree required, or a combination of education and experience
  • Copy and original cataloging experience
  • 2-3 years of experience in library technical services, in an academic setting preferred
  • Experience with an integrated library system (ILS), preferably Koha
  • Experience with interlibrary loan lending and borrowing
