POSITION SUMMARY:

The Ophthalmic Photographer performs all of the photography and angiography for the department of Ophthalmology. The department is currently utilizing digital imaging systems, so a strong background and base knowledge in digital file handling is a must. Participates in the care of patients in a clinical setting by performing various ophthalmic examinations; scheduling appointments and maintaining patient medical records. Responsibilities also include organizing and prioritizing work to ensure completion in a timely manner. Photographers report directly to the ophthalmic technician supervisor.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

  • Greets patients and gather demographic information and documents in the medical record.
  • Performs all types of ophthalmic photography, e.g., fundus, external and anterior segment.
  • Assists physicians by performing diagnostic tests, e.g.: specular microscopy, OCT, Pentacam and Optos.
  • Regularly maintains work area and equipment in a neat and orderly manner; assists in the cleaning and organizing of the Center’s section on own initiative and reports any malfunctioning equipment as observed by supervisor.
  • Working towards learning basic ophthalmology workups. Once proficient and has completed the Ophthalmic Technician I competency checklist, assists the clinic as needed with workups.

Must be able to effectively troubleshoot and proficiently perform the following key devices within six months:

  • Optos fundus camera
  • DRS fundus camera
  • Heidelberg OCT
  • Zeiss OCT
  • Pentacam

Must adhere to all of BMC’s RESPECT behavioral standards.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

BS preferred, High School diploma or GED required.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

None

EXPERIENCE:

One year of previous work experience in Photography or optometric technician designation required.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Ability to manage patient workflow, multitask and think productively under pressure.
  • Requires the interpersonal skills necessary to relate to patients in a sympathetic and tactful manner and allay patient apprehensions.
  • Excellent English communication skills (oral and written). Bilingual or multi-lingual skills (beyond that of English) appropriate to the patient population served is a plus.
