The Reading/Writing Faculty will teach all courses assigned and assist the department in its endeavor to serve students and to support the mission of Odessa College.

Specific Position Duties

  1. Teach assigned courses in the curriculum.
  2. Teach face-to-face, web, hybrid, and ITV classes as requested, using a variety of instructional technologies including Tegrity.
  3. Teach CollegeNow (Dual Credit) classes to locations in the West Texas area.
  4. Assist with recruitment, advising, and retention activities as well as participate in various departmental and campus-wide committees.
  5. Ability to teach all courses in the English curriculum: sophomore survey courses in American, British, and World Literature; freshman literature genre course; freshman composition; and developmental English courses which carry institutional credit only.
  6. Maintain up-to-date knowledge in the teaching field.
  7. Demonstrate willingness and ability to teach various courses, times, locations, and delivery methods, as needed and as reasonably requested by the college.
  8. Utilize appropriately challenging coursework to help students realize their full potential as learners.
  9. Provide students with written expectations, e.g., syllabi, policies, assignment instructions, graded evaluations, etc.
  10. Administer tests which are appropriate to course content, including a comprehensive final exam measuring overall grasp of course objectives.
  11. Affirm the worth and dignity of all persons and the right of all persons to learn.
  12. Maintain an appropriate learning and assessment climate in the classroom, whether traditional, web, or distance, which encourages the free exchange of ideas while defending academic honesty and objectivity.
  13. Prepare adequately for class and arrive promptly at class meetings, labs, and any other scheduled instructional activities.
  14. Deliver material in a clear and understandable manner.
  15. Address student concerns, i.e., comments, questions, and input, both in class and via posted office hours, timely electronic communication, and other suitable means.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. BA or BS with a Texas Reading Certification OR Master’s degree in English OR a Master’s degree in Education with a concentration in Reading from a regionally accredited institution.
  2. Computer literacy.
  3. Experience in teaching composition in a computer-based environment.
  4. Demonstrated ability to teach students from a wide spectrum of ages and from diverse cultural and social backgrounds, including high school students who are enrolled in concurrent classes.
  5. Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  6. Excellent work ethic; and commitment to teaching excellence.
