Responsibilities

The role will be a mixture of hands-on designer, creative director, project leader, and valued partner to Product and Engineering teams. We also need someone who can develop a strong clear point of view for what their product UX should be; design within the technical capabilities and limitations of what can be built while always pushing for more; and foster a user-centered approach to product definition and development for Design but also for the entire Product team. As a Principal Designer, you may be the Lead for your projects. You’ll guide the work of more junior designer on a project-by-project basis as well as work with user researchers to do generative and evaluative research for your designs.

You’re a great fit if you have at least some of these characteristics:

  • You’re a ‘full stack’ designer and a ‘player-coach’ kind of design leader. You look at interaction design, visual design and aesthetics, typography, motion, 3D, human factors, and more as tools in the UX designer’s toolkit. You may have strengths in most of these areas, know how they work together, can still design hands on; but you know how to direct the work and combine it all into an experience that delights.
  • You have mastery of driving a user-centered product design process. This includes leading projects and teams as a creative leader across all phases of the product design process, from project definition to user research, to strategy formulation, opportunity area identification, ideation, prototyping, testing, into final visual design, production, and delivery.
  • You have a track record of designing, building, and shipping Consumer or Enterprise digital software products.
  • You don’t already know everything, and you love to learn. You’re hungry to learn about business, technology, and design and how they all work together to deliver breakthrough products.
  • You’re confident in your abilities and judgement, but know you can always improve your designs work. You consume large amounts of quantitative and qualitative data to constantly refine your assumptions. You iterate. You love finding out you’re wrong and refining your designs until they’re right.
  • You love technology and inventing new ways tech can enable breakthrough user experiences that transform what a product can be.
  • You thrive on working well with others. You make the people around you better. You love to collaborate with designers, user researchers, engineers, product managers, executives, and inspire them to do their best.
  • You get stuff done.
  • You do quality work, reliably, exceeding expectations, and deliver on time (at least most of the time).
  • You’re a fantastic storyteller. You know that our products tell our customers a story through the user experience. You won’t rest until that story is a compelling one.
  • You love rules and you know when to break them. You think systemically because you know that creating a coherent experience requires it. But you know when the system needs to expand to accommodate the user. And you know when to do something completely unique to create an arresting and product-defining moment in the product that makes users ooh and aah.
  • Finally, you want to be part of creating dramatic and impactful change at a company that is committed to becoming a light unto others when it comes to user experience design.
