Description: This temporary, five-month position’s duties encompass editorial, production, information technology, and customer service, along with management of the processes required to produce GSA Bulletin, one of the society’s scientific journals.

Key Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  1. Manages editorial and most production functions associated with online publication of GSA Bulletin, including communicating with editors, authors, and reviewers; preparing accepted papers for copyeditors by utilizing eXtyles software and performing internal checks; checking the work of copyeditors; inputting author corrections; providing files to typesetter and checking typesetter’s work; proofreading typeset papers; posting papers online; compiling digital journal issues; and quality checking final, published issues.
  2. Monitors workflow and ensures timely print and online publication of peer-reviewed research papers.
  3. High-level usage of online manuscript submission and peer-review system (eJournal Press), including content technical checks, processing submissions, troubleshooting system, and providing technical support for authors, editors, and reviewers.
  4. Collaborates with science editors to ensure timely publication of high-quality papers.
  5. Determines pagination of bi-monthly issues.
  6. XML codes metadata; packages and publishes online content; resupplies online files as needed; identifies and resolves content tagging issues or works with vendors to resolve these.
  7. May provide editorial services to meet the needs of the GSA headquarters staff and science editors.
  8. Maintains relationships with authors, staff, reviewers, science editors, associate editors, editorial board members, and vendors.
  9. Completes administrative duties, such as archiving, maintaining drives, tracking and updating publication data (ranging from XML files to simple statistics), and preparing reports.
  10. Performs other tasks as required by the editorial manager or publications director.
  11. Oversees work of exempt, non-exempt, and contract employees (includes editorial assistant, production staff, and contract copy editors, proofreaders, and typesetters).
  12. Other duties as assigned.

Does not supervise others.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Experience following a house style guide and the Chicago Manual of Style.
  2. Adept at multitasking (ability to prioritize and handle several projects at once).
  3. Strong organization skills, attention to detail, and comfort with spreadsheets.
  4. Knowledge of manuscript submission and peer review systems (e.g., eJournal Press or Editorial Manager, etc.), eXtyles, and the print/electronic publication process preferred.

Requirements:

  1. Extensive computer work (six or more hours per day).
  2. Multiple projects and deadlines that create a demanding work environment are standard.
  3. GSA has offices in Boulder, Colorado, and Washington, D.C., and supports remote and hybrid teams. This temporary position is not eligible for relocation or remote office setup assistance; however, a GSA laptop will be provided that must be utilized for all GSA work.
  4. An ideal candidate will have the ability to start immediately.

The opportunity is a full-time, non-exempt position with the flexibility to be conducted remotely or as a Hybrid work schedule of 32-40 hours per week from March -July 2025.
