Position Definition: This position requires a creative and technology savvy team player who works under the direct supervision of the department Supervisor, but may also report to department librarians as directed by the Supervisor, to perform a variety of duties at the adult reference desk and in the history room, in addition to a variety of non-public duties that affect the quality of services provided to the public.


Example of Duties:

  1. Ability to work at a busy reference desk to answer basic reference questions.
  2. Ability to successfully promote adult programs and conduct outreach services.
  3. Assists with programming for adults.
  4. Assists with collection development and reader’s advisory using indexes, bibliographies, and other sources.
  5. Assists the public in using the public computers to access the public catalog, Internet, and databases.
  6. Provides general technical support, self-service resources (photocopiers, printers, computers, software applications, online registration, and placing holds on items).
  7. Assists with simple maintenance and basic troubleshooting of: computers, printers, and photocopiers.
  8. Assists with Adult Services flyers, press releases, emails, calendars, newsletters, and website.
  9. Assists with community group tours, book clubs, and database, technology, and 3D printer training classes.
  10. Attends reference training and other educational programs as they become available.
  11. Establishes priorities in performance of assigned duties and reports accomplished tasks to Supervisor.

Ability to acquire a working knowledge of professional library methods, reference resources and practices, regulations and procedures pertaining to library responsibilities; knowledge of books, authors and reader’s interests; skill in understanding and using computer applications; skill in applying library research methods and practices; ability to work independently with a minimum of supervision; ability to communicate effectively in written and oral expression; ability to deal with the public in a professional and courteous manner; knowledge of and experience with PCs, LANs and the Internet; maintains confidentiality of library users’ records; works in other areas of the library as necessary.


Minimum Qualifications: Two years post-secondary education is required. Applicant must be proficient in the Microsoft Office Package and interested in learning new technologies. Two years of work experience in a public library is a plus.


Hours: Up to 19.5 hrs/wk.
