Position Overview:

Under the supervision of the Field Operations Manager, this position will focus on the installation and maintenance of trunked P25 public safety radio communication equipment infrastructure and associated cabling, wiring, and antenna systems located at radio communications towers and dispatch centers. The position involves system-level troubleshooting and user configuration. You will use a personal computer in your daily tasks. You will work inside buildings and outside in the field in all kinds of weather including Hurricanes and Tropical Storms. You will interface with first responders and communicators at various times. On call rotation will be required to insure the reliability of the system. This is a very dynamic and technical position, and you will be challenged at times to ensure the radio system stays on the air for our first responders.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Customer-Service oriented, working directly with public safety professionals to diagnose and solve communications equipment problems in real time.

  • Uses standard hand and specialized tools as well as specialized test equipment to install and maintain the public safety radio system.

  • Frequently handles confidential radio system information.

  • Essential physical demands for climbing ladders, lifting up to 50 pounds, and working outdoors and at times in inclement weather.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is required.

  • Successful completion of an industry, advanced or military electronics communications training program or certificate.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 4 years' experience in electronics communications equipment and infrastructure service and repair.

Knowledge & Skills Required:

  • Technical and operating knowledge of radio transmitting and receiving equipment and associated computer programming equipment for conventional and trunked radio system/mobile equipment.

  • Technical and operating knowledge of personal computers and associated radio system software.

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of communication system design and construction.

  • Knowledge of dispatch console configuration and troubleshooting and repair.

  • Microwave and Ethernet backhaul connectivity system diagnostics, maintenance and repair.

  • LAN\WAN IP networking troubleshooting and repair.

  • Knowledge of AC\DC power and battery systems, troubleshooting and maintenance.

  • Knowledge of UPS systems maintenance and troubleshooting.

  • Technical knowledge and use of various test equipment including, multimeters, spectrum analyzers, watt meters and antenna test equipment.

  • The ability to work with various hand and power tools.

  • Fundamental understanding of radio tower lighting standards and systems as well as system operation and troubleshooting.

  • Must possess good communication skills both oral and written.

  • Good documentation skills.

  • Must be committed to maintaining base stations and consoles to high standards to ensure the safety and reliability of communications for our first responders.

  • Maintain a commitment and focus to high customer service standards.

  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check and drug test.

  • Works well with minimal supervision.

  • Understanding of FCC rules and regulations as they pertain to public safety communications.

  • Understanding of RF propagation and interference investigation.

Applicants for this position will be subject to a criminal background check that includes being fingerprinted. This applies to any position with network access to Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) or access to an area where CJIS is received, maintained or stored either manually or electronically (i.e. custodian, maintenance).

Automatic Disqualification:

  • Convictions, probation, or deferred adjudication for any Felony, and any Class A Misdemeanor
  • Convictions, probation, or deferred adjudication for a Class B Misdemeanor, if within the previous 10 years
  • Open arrest for any criminal offense (Felony or Misdemeanor)
  • Family Violence conviction

Education:

  • Bachelor or Associates degree in modern electronics.

  • Military communications training will be considered in place of degree.

  • Motorola P25 training.

Experience:

  • 4 years of working knowledge of radio communications and electronics.

  • Public safety communications or mission critical communications experience is preferred.

  • Supervisory and Control Data Systems (SCADA) configuration and maintenance.

  • Wireline dispatch console programming, troubleshooting and repair.

  • Knowledge of generator and transfer switch operations and basic troubleshooting.

Knowledge & Skills Preferred:

  • FEMA National Incident Management System training and/or experience.

  • Fundamental knowledge of computer networking.

  • Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

  • Be a team player committed to the mission of providing exceptional service to our customers.

  • Radio programming experience.

  • Knowledge of Motorola R56 grounding standards.

  • Knowledge of Motorola radio infrastructure equipment, Moscad, MCC7500 and MCC7100 consoles, GTR8000 stand alone and simulcast base stations, consolettes and software suites.

Licensure:
  • Class B non-cdl driver’s license.


Hours:

  • 40 Hours per Week / Monday – Friday

  • Works more than forty hours during the workweek, weekends or 24 hours when On-Call.

Salary:

  • Depends on Qualifications

  • Based on 26 Pay Periods

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs. and/or move boxes and equipment as needed.

  • Subject to kneeling, crouching, handling, climbing, walking, sitting, twisting and reaching as needed to perform the essential functions.

  • Majority of the workday will be in the field.

Special Requirements:

  • Must pass FBI Criminal Justice Information Services background check and CJIS Awareness Certification within 90 days of hire.

  • Must have a valid Texas driver’s license.


Employment may be contingent on passing a drug screen and meeting other standards.
