General Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director Summer Programs and the HOT Clay Coordinator when applicable, the Ceramics Studio Technician will work with professional faculty members, and will be responsible for all aspects of organization, setup and maintenance of the ceramics studios and all equipment and supplies during the Idyllwild Arts Summer Program.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

  1. Order clay and supplies - each instructor has different equipment and supply requirements.
  2. Attend all Hot Clay faculty and student meetings, orientations, lectures, etc.
  3. Be present during the workshop hours, and as needed before and after.
  4. Prepare and inspect equipment in studios and other classrooms; return equipment to storage at the end of the summer. Maintain inventory.
  5. Work with workshop assistants to set up studios per the faculty’s request including, but not limited to workstations, shared equipment, wheels, etc.
  6. Maintain studios and equipment on a daily basis including cleaning of tables, sinks, trash removal.
  7. Prepare, cut and distribute clay daily as needed; record any student purchases; collect payment at week’s end; process payments collected.
  8. Manage and pug clay reclaim.
  9. Maintain, update and organize master inventory list of supplies, equipment, clay; prepare final inventory and safely store all items at summer’s end.
  10. Assist with teaching as needed per instructor.
  11. Load/fire/unload kilns in participation with Studio Manager and workshop assistants.
  12. Anticipate needs of upcoming ceramics workshops.
  13. Oversee evening open studio hours.
  14. Ensure that the studio is locked and secure when class is not in session.
  15. Schedule and oversee weekly housekeeping appointments in studios.
  16. Oversee studio clean-up at the end of each session so it is in original condition for all workshops after Hot Clay.
  17. Monitor all safety and health issues in the studios. Report needs or issues to Studio Manager.
  18. Other duties assigned by the Director of Summer Programs or faculty members.

DATES & PAY

Ceramics Studio Technician work from June 1–July 19, 2025 with meals and housing included. Ceramics Studio Technician pay ranges between $20 and $24 per hour based on experience and qualifications. Summer staff members are classified as employees by the IRS and the State of California so federal and state taxes are withheld from all paychecks.

Qualifications

High school graduate with at least three years of college preferred. Must have experience in ceramics, and must have knowledge of tools, equipment, and kilns as well as their maintenance; safe use and handling of all tools, equipment, compounds, etc., used in ceramics. Must be an active problem solver, working well with a variety of teachers and students-both adult and youth. Must have the ability to lift heavy objects and perform light maintenance duties.
