Job Description
NOAA EPIC Program is seeking a senior technical writer to work in a fast-paced Agile development setting for performing operations, design, and development of science-driven applications to operate in on-premise or cloud-based High Performance Computing (HPC) environments. EPIC provides acceleration community-developed scientific and technological enhancements into the operational applications for Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) and improved Research to Operations (R2O). As a member of the Raytheon EPIC team you will ensure adherence to operational agreements and policies (including response times), compliance with program and NOAA standards and requirements (including Section 508 compliance), leveraging industry best practices for automation and scalability of assets, and implementation of issue detection and alerts.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Update and expand documentation for Unified Forecast System (UFS) applications, models, and components.
- Solicit and coordinate internal and external input sent as questions, comments, or pull requests to code repositories.
- Produce tutorial and training content that meets the varied needs of both key stakeholders and the broader weather modeling community.
- Respond to user questions and develop material (such as FAQs) to address commonly encountered concerns.
- Collaborate with software engineers to document code management activities, including best practices and standards for the community on documenting their code and writing tests.
- Other duties as assigned.
This position requires an eligible U.S. Person to obtain any required Export Authorization.
Job Requirements
- Attention to detail, demonstrated through previous experience.
- Minimum of 3 years of technical writing and editing experience.
- Experience following a style guide.
- Familiarity with the basics of GitHub comments and pull requests.
- Ability to interpret and capture technical concepts in concise, understandable, and well-organized writing.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Good experience in preparing IT technical documents.
- Willingness to learn different software tools, scripting languages, and development frameworks.
- Capable of organizing, editing, and clarifying documents as a contributing writer in an Agile environment.
Desired Experience, Knowledge, and/or Skills:
- Experience using programming and scripting languages such as Python, Bash, and Fortran in an Agile environment.
- In-depth knowledge of the Unified Forecast System (UFS) weather model, Short-Range Weather application, Land DA applications, and UFS model components, specifically FV3, CCPP, MOM6, ESMF and NUOPC, UPP, and spack-stack, ufs-bundle, and JEDI Skylab.
- Ability to read/understand code and research different variables.
Required Education
8 years of relevant experience with a bachelor's degree in computer science, Engineering, or related technical field.
